So… a big step for me (pun intended):  A review post.  Somehow I was able to get away with not doing one.  For good reason.  Most of the reviews have been… well, for girls or babies!  Another reason: my critical eye, great taste, and high standards… I did marry my DW, after all!  What sponsor would want to undergo my scrutiny?

First… a confession.  I am particular with my feet.  I’ve had them all my life.  Maybe they look a bit Hobbit-ish but, we have been through a lot.  We have done 10k’s, play basketball, hiked Mt. Washington, and most importantly… achieved a 3rd degree black belt in Tang Soo Do.  They have given me a lot, and I treat them the best I can.  So what I put on them has to meet quality control inspector #1 – ME!  By the way…my feet have even survived a pedicure!

So it would take a company with courage to have MKDaddy review a product that would please my dogs!  Fortunately, it’s one of my favorite shoe brands: New Balance. Here we go… the New Balance 890.

4 great colors each for men and women!

Active dads will love this shoe – at a mere 9.65 ounces (men’s 9.5), the New Balance 890 is the lightest shoe of its kind in the neutral cushioning category. Instead of sacrificing cushioning or construction, the New Balance 890 uses a RevLite midsole to give a surprisingly light running experience that is also comfortable for high mileage training.

My first impression was the New Balance 890 are light…deceptively light.  Usually size 12′s tend to be clod-hoppers.  Ever try running with swim fins?? That’s how most athletic shoes feel on my feet.  The lightness of the NB890 made me wary if these shoes would hold my 6’2” frame at 200 lbs.  (how many other bloggers give their vital stats?)

So light, even a baby can carry it!

The next thing that caught my attention was the fit.  I really liked the fit… snug, with give.  Second skin-like.  I tried to get my feet to slide around like in my basketball shoes… but this shoe was not having it. The New Balance 890 hugs my feet perfectly. The technical terminology for this kind of fit… well, New Balance says it best:

a dialed in midfoot wrap, an open and rounded vamp, and comfortable, irritation-free flex points

I am not much for the long distance stuff anymore.  Now, I stick with shorter distances, sprint work, and throw in a little plyometrics.  True to form… these shoes are holding up to the pacing I put them through.  I am looking forward to using them the rest of the summer.

And the little guy – well, he just can’t wait to fill his daddy’s shoes!

Athletic shoes like the New Balance 890 make a great Father’s Day Gift idea!

Buy it: Check out the New Balance 890 - check out this cool video that shows just how light it is! ARV $100.

Win it: One lucky reader will win pair of New Balance 890s (men’s or women’s)

Disclosure: I was sent a product to facilitate this review. I was not compensated in any other way, and all opinions are 100% my own.

Barefoot is my all time favorite. BUT!!! When it comes to athletic shoes, the ONLY one I’ll get is New Balance! They simply fit the best, are the most comfortable and last! No other!

I need to treat my feet a lot better! I play tennis every summer, and I always end up stubbing my toes and losing at least one toenail altogether (and the rest of my toes are often black-and-blue). I think a big part of that is that I don’t have good support in my sneakers, so I’d love the chance to upgrade my running shoes for more comfort (and fewer blisters and bruises!).

How do I treat my feet? Since I am on my feet all day I have to be really good to them. I am reluctant to try new brands of shoes because of the cost.

I have high arches. I need shoes that totally support them.

Once I find a brand I hate to leave it. Although I did have luck recently with Columbia shoes. Now they are added to my brand of choice (skechers).

  • Barbara Fox June 14, 2011, 9:33 am

I really treat my feet badly. Poor things. They are old now & I am still going around wearing flat flip-flops all the time & they are starting to mutiny. They really need a good pair of running shoes to make them happy. hint. hint.

I don’t do anything special to care for my feet. I wash them daily :) and I try to stay off of them once-in-awhile (I like to keep my feet up so my ankles don’t swell). New Balance is the only brand of walking shoes I’ve purchased for the past 20 years. The deep toe box is more comfortable for my feet than any other brand of athletic shoe I’ve ever worn. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Emmy June 13, 2011, 11:47 pm

I reward my feet. I choose shoes on fashion and not comfort. So, I treat me feet well at home at the day’s end. Regular pedicures (at home to save money!) with foot soaks, lotions, etc.

I am very picky about my shoes, because I have a high but not strong arch. I usually put orthotic inserts in my shoes to make them more comfortable.

  • Sylvie W June 13, 2011, 9:17 pm

Although I don’t treat my feet in any special fashion, I do make sure I have footwear that fits well. That is nothing worse that footwear that is too tight, rubs, causes blisters, etc . . . These New Balance Sneaks would be a nice home for my feet.

I try to be very good to my feet as I can by keeping them moisturized and using a pumice stone! But the one thing my feet will not tolerate is uncomfortable shoes (no matter HOW good they may LOOK!) And finding comfortable athletic shoes seems to a problem. They’re either too tight, too heavy, or uncomfortable in some other way! So I basically gave up looking for new ones. But now my old ones are so worn, I’m embarrassed to even wear them in my own home! LOL! So I’m hoping that THESE will be the ones I have been looking for!

Great review. Yeah for hubby getting in on the action.

I have some new balance shoes for myself and little T Rex had a pair a couple sizes ago. They are in safe keeping for his little sis. She’s already wearing his shoe hand-me-downs and does not seem to care if they are boyish. At least not yet anyway.

I am fanatical about my feet. I have NO calluses. Nope – not one. And I was a ballet dancer for 15 years. I rarely wear heels and mostly wear my clogs for work and sneakers/running shoes around town. I also have a pair of my nephew’s hand-me-down Vans that I love. Plus, I put cream on them every night and massage areas that might be susceptible to break down.

I don’t do a lot for my feet — but I do try to get good quality shoes. The extra support goes a long way towards keeping my feet comfy. My hubby on the other hand buys cheapo sneaks then complains that his feet hurt! If I win, he gets these, and hopefully I’ll prove my point about good quality shoes.

I would love to win these for my hubs. He doesn’t treat his feet well and is paying for it with back pain and fatigue. He is “frugal” and hates to spend money on himself, he would rather spoil me <3 He has been wearing the same sneakers since we got married 6 yrs ago. This hard working daddy deserves a new pair of kicks!

My husband spends so much time on his feet, and for many years the only place he’d buy shoes was at Walmart. I finally got him to try a pair of New Balance several years ago, and now he says “how did I ever wear those cheap shoes?” Indeed!

  • Diane R. June 9, 2011, 8:11 pm

Having gone through painful bunion surgery, I certainly do pay attention to my feet and what goes on them. The shoes have to fit and they have to be comfortable. Oh, and I still go barefoot in the house.

I pretty much always wear hiking boots because I pretty much live outside. When my feet cant handle it anymore or I need running shoes I wear New Balance 574′s (recently switched from Reebok Classics) and just feel in love with the way New Balance fit me. I should probably wear them more often because my knees hurt less after wearing them for extended periods of time instead of my boots.

The shoe is the heart of the foot. A miserable foot makes life like an armpit. I started speed walking with a little jog thrown in. The proper shoe gives balance and comfort for this. Growing older, exercise is needed and I want the best shoe possible to make it more enjoyable.

My feet sometimes are neglected. I think the shoe matters.

I need to choose a shoe with good support. I tend to mostly wear sneakers and because I have knee problems, the quality, support and comfort is very important to me.
    Thanks so much

I run about 40-50 miles per week and the shoe is important. You need the right match for your feet for sure.

I would love these for the hubs. I pamper my feet and I’d love my hubs to be able to wear comfy shoes like these! Yes, shoes do matter! A lot!

I probably could treat my feet better. I love to be barefoot and my podiatrist said that is a no no. But when I do wear shoes I wear sensible shoes. I am not a high heels wearer.
