Camping with a baby? What will the little dude eat!? If you’re bringing a cooler… you need to fill it with food. Food that travels well!! Lots of my favorite foods don’t. Like ice cream. But there are many delicious, organic, nutritious options for camping, hiking, road trips, picnics… any kind of outdoor eating! Here are a few of my favorites! (And baby likes most of them too!).

SnackTAXI

When we camp, food is everywhere. Sometimes it’s hard to locate certain items /snacks in the cooler. Or, because everything’s pressing on each other, by the end of the trip, my plastic bags are smooshed and ripped. This time, I’ll be taking my set of snackTAXI’s – the original reusable bags for snacks and sandwiches! SnackTAXI bags are just as easy as plastic sandwich bags, and more fun because they come in a wide range of prints! Plus you’ll never have to buy another bag, so they help you save money and reduce waste! My son knows he’s getting “cookies” (really just crackers) when I pull out his Haul It cars SnackTAXI. He takes it everywhere with him now!

SnackTAXI is a local Massachusetts company; their bags are hand-made by local crafters! Keep up with SnackTAXI on Facebook! ARV $15 for a set of snack/sandwich bags.

ECOlunchpod Stainless Steel Snack Cup

When I have snacks that don’t work in the SnackTAXI, I stash them in my ECOlunchpod stainless steel snack cup. This nifty half-cup container might hold applesauce one day and sliced fruit the next. Anything that might be damp/fragile (but not too liquidy, because there is NO plastic in this container so it isn’t leak-proof). Perfect for protecting a serving of berries or sliced vegetables for a road-trip lunch!

Find this item separately (ARV $7) or as part of a 3 container set (ARV $22) at EcoMom.com, where I love to discover amazing natural/organic products! First time buyers get a 15% discount with this code: SB005897.

Funky Monkey Snacks

Our family adores dried fruit snacks! We sometimes dry our own, but we can’t freeze dry like the awesome Funky Monkey Snacks we tried out! Their 1-ounce bags contain 3 of the 4 daily recommended servings of fruit! So many great flavors: Applemon, Bananamon, Carnaval Mix, JiveALime, MangOJ, Pink Pineapple, and Purple Funk! (Eh, I admit Purple Funk was not my favorite flavor, but to each his own!).

Funky Monkey Snacks are the real deal – light, crunchy (not gummy or powdery), and naturally sweet! These full-slices of fruit (not eensy-weensy dices) disappear in no time! A lightweight snack for hiking, they are gluten, wheat, dairy, peanut, and tree nut free! If that’s not enough, try non-GMO, vegan, raw, and kosher – that’s a lot for one snack, but Funky Monkey delivers! ARV $0.99-2.49. Catch up with Funky Monkey Snacks on Facebook and Twitter!

Batter Blaster

What’s a camping morning without a hearty breakfast cooked in a cast-iron skillet over the fire? But who wants the mess of mixing up pancakes? Not me! We’ll be taking cans of Batter Blaster with us to whip up a pile of flapjacks for the family! When I heard about pancake mix in a can, I knew I had to try it! What a nifty concept! Batter Blaster is organic all-in-one pancake and waffle batter mix in a whipped cream-like recyclable can. Shake and squeeze into your frying pan.

It took a few pancakes to get used to the light batter (I make a heavier one from scratch, but the CO² makes the pancakes light and airy, and gives them a longer shelf life!), but soon I was flipping out Batter Blaster’s Organic Whole Wheat with Brown Sugar & Cinnamon,  Double Chocolate,  and Buttermilk pancakes. Batter Blaster is GREAT for filling pancake molds without spilling batter all over!

Find Batter Blaster at Whole Foods and other grocers. ARV $3.99. Follow Batter Blaster on Facebook and Twitter!

Mountain House Chicken Salad Wraps

Would you believe a freeze-dried chicken salad could taste great!? Believe it. I ate two of them last weekend. Mountain House, the leading brand of freeze-dried backpacking food, just came out with a new Chicken Salad Wrap flavor! The Chicken Salad Wrap includes chucks of creamy chicken with red onions, cranberries and pumpkin seeds. Hubby and I agreed the pumpkin seeds really made this wrap stand out. This wrap took us about 10 minutes to make. We added cold water to the pouch and let it sit for 8-9 minutes. Stir, and spread onto whole wheat wraps to eat! Delicious. You could serve this over rice or pasta, but I think as a wrap it’s best! Mountain House Wraps include Buffalo Style Chicken, Mexican Style Beef, Barbecue Sauce with Beef, Breakfast Skillet, and Chicken Fajita. It’s gourmet eating on the mountaintops! (And super lightweight if you’re backpacking!).

Oh, can’t use it this summer? No worries –the pouches keep for 7 years, so hang onto it! Find Mountain House online or at major sports/outdoor retailers. ARV $6.40. Or follow along on Facebook and Twitter!

LÄRABAR

You don’t get far down the trail without breaking out… the granola bar. There are so many snack bars on the market, but look closely and you’ll find many with HFCS or lots of sugars and little nutrition! Which is why I like the distinctive flavors of LÄRABAR . LÄRABAR is a delicious blend of unsweetened fruits, nuts and spices. Made from 100% whole food, each flavor contains no more than nine ingredients. Another cool fact: If placed in the freezer or in cold temperatures, LÄRABAR becomes firmer, but will not freeze. Similarly, LÄRABAR (with the exception of the flavors containing chocolate chips) will not melt when heated. Making it the perfect traveling food! There are nineteen incredible flavors to choose – my favorites include Pecan Pie, Cashew Cookie , and Chocolate Chip Brownie – check out their website where you’ll get cool nutrition facts on each ingredient in each bar!

Follow LÄRABAR on Twitter and enter their weekly giveaway! Or like them on Facebook! ARV $1.59. LALÄRABAR is owned by Small Planet Foods, which also owns Cascadian Farms organic foods – a range of cereals, juices, frozen fruits and vegetables and more at great prices!

I haven’t gone camping with my son yet but there is a snack that I always have on hand. It is in my diaper bag, in the car on a long trip or in my purse. They are these applesauce pouches called go go squeez by materne. My son loves them and he calls them “appy” and would eat them all day and nothing else if I let him.

  • Amanda R July 26, 2011, 4:00 pm

When we go camping, we tend to bring bottle of water + those powdered drinks designed to be poured and shaken up in water bottles. My personal favorite is the original Hawaiian Punch version of those, but I know Hawaiian Punch is not a favorite of a LOT of people.

  • Paula Hafner July 26, 2011, 3:26 pm

We like to take various crackers and several different kinds of sliced up cheese. Last time, I also took pepperoni and several types of lunch meat that I had cut up. The kids loved making “cracker sandwiches”.

I actually dislike camping…and Ive never even gone. My qualm is with the being outdoor and unless I have a camper with a regular bed I miss the comforts of home. I’ve never tried any of these products, but they would be useful not for camping specifically, but for a mini-campout.

  • April bever July 26, 2011, 11:56 am

haven’t tried any of the products yet.
When we go camping I like to take nuts nad granola bars. These two things help with the muchies while some good camp food is being prepared

Funky Monkey Snack are great! I especially love their Carnaval Mix!

Some other food items to add to your list for camping / traveling are: jerky, trail mix, and – if you can keep them cool – : cups of yogurt that you freeze ahead of time and hard-boiled eggs.

  • Laura July 23, 2011, 11:37 pm

My boyfriend goes on mountain bike and road bike rides often. I think the LÄRABARs might be a good snack for him to take. We’re also planning to go camping this summer and I could totally see using these products. :)

  • Tiffany U July 22, 2011, 11:10 pm

These are all products that I have been seriously looking to try with the exception of the batter blaster because I figure it would take like 3 cans to feed my gaggle of kids but I never thought of using it while camping and that is just a nifty idea so nifty we might be able to talk DH into it ;)!

The only one of the giveaway items that I have tried is the Larabars and I LOVE them—the Blueberry Muffin flavor is better than an actual blueberry muffin. My go-to cooler snacks are marinated tofu snacks, mozzarella sticks, and Sahale Nut Blends.

  • Melissa B. July 21, 2011, 8:45 pm

I’ve been dying to try the batter blaster.

I hands down love love love Funky Monkey snacks! I love how sweet they are, and you know it is natural and still healthy :) I’m interested though to try Batter Blaster. Back when I would camp, we used “Shake n Pour”. Definitely not the healthiest pancake batter out there, but it was simple, easy, delicious, and just add water. I’m interested to try the Larbars too! This is a great summer giveaway, thanks! :)

  • Colleen July 19, 2011, 10:08 pm

Larabars are the best and easy to take along. My boys even like them. I like the fact that they are healthy choice. Thanks for the giveaway

  • Becca July 19, 2011, 9:16 pm

I love LaraBars. My family loves trail mix when we’re camping. It’s sort of become a tradition. I get it in the bulk bins at Sunflower Market or Sprouts. We often do packets of instant oatmeal for breakfast when we’re camping. Not very exciting or original, but it’s easy and everyone in the family likes it, so who am I to argue?

  • amanda July 19, 2011, 8:59 pm

i tried the batter blasters as a quick sunday breakfast idea and they were pretty gross. i’m definitely just making my own batter from now on.

  • lace July 19, 2011, 7:31 pm

Those pouches are fascinating to me. They last 7 years?!? Crazy! I’d like to give them a taste-test.

When we travel, we bring along yogurt-covered raisins, beef jerky, fresh fruit, fruit leathers, and crackers.

  • Kendra July 18, 2011, 9:45 pm

have not tried any of these products or seen them here in the midwest yet, they look great to take on our hiking trips, those wraps would be convenient

  • Jacob LaFountaine July 18, 2011, 8:07 pm

Lara bars have a good taste much better than others. I tried Batter Blaster but it went funky in the bottle quickly which I thought was odd

  • Sara T July 18, 2011, 1:25 pm

I’ve tried a Larabar once before, and it was quite tasty. I never thought about it before, but it is a great feature that it won’t melt if the car is hot. Plus if I remember correctly, it doesn’t crumble at all or make a mess everywhere.

I have been wanting to get a reusable snack bag for my baby’s cereal, rather than a ziplock bag. :(

The stainless steel snack pack looks fantastic. I’d love to have this for cut fruit as you suggested.

    Great items.

  • gilbert crouse July 18, 2011, 1:11 pm

wife turned me on to batter blaster it’s a definite must try at the very least

  • Anna-Leigh July 18, 2011, 12:49 pm

  • Alicia E. July 18, 2011, 8:32 am

  • Linda July 18, 2011, 7:32 am

I would love to have the Snack Taxi’s for sending in school lunches.

  • T. Lawson July 18, 2011, 5:23 am

I have tried LARABARS. They are very good.

  • Sarah Hull July 18, 2011, 3:02 am

I’ve tried Batter Blaster before – it’s pretty good actually! It is a littler “runnier” than pancake mix you would make yourself, but it sure is easy! It is a little pricey for a weekly treat, but taking it camping is a GREAT idea! I hadn’t thought of that before – way easier than taking all the dry ingredients. I also love Larabars – they are super tasty and filling!

Another item that I take with me pretty much everywhere and would take camping too are pureed food pouches (like Plum Organics and Peter Rabbit Organics). They are tasty, organic and so easy to bring for little ones, since they don’t have to be refrigerated before opening. They are great additions to smoothies and perfect for adding fruits and veggies to your day when you are out camping and hiking!

  • veronica July 17, 2011, 9:13 pm

I love Larabars… they are one of the only gluten-free things I can take on the go

  • Mellissa C July 17, 2011, 9:02 pm

I like the Assorted Funky Monkey Snacks . I know get them for my kids but I can not help myself sometimes I eat them all.

  • Courtney Fisk July 17, 2011, 8:52 pm

i just recently learned about Larabars- what a great story! we love camping, although it has been on hold for a few years. I plan to get the kids out camping soon this year!

  • Natalie Sharp July 17, 2011, 8:50 pm

How excellent is this even just for the information. The giveaway is great too. I am looking forward to trying these products. I love all the great products I learn about from this blog!!!!

  • Zene July 17, 2011, 8:33 pm

  • Theresa H July 17, 2011, 7:47 pm

We like the Batter Blaster when we tried it….kind of expensive for an every time we have pancakes….but yummy

  • Amber July 17, 2011, 7:16 pm

All these prize packs look great -thank you for your generosity! I’m definitely sharing this on Facebook and Twitter. I have tried a few different flavors of LARABARS before and I’m so impressed that they come up with such yummy flavors and dates are the primary ingredient in all of the bars!

  • amorette July 17, 2011, 6:22 pm

i love larabars for camping and backpacking, and i also love that they are easy to make yourself, because they have so few ingredients! i have made them using the basic recipe of pureeing dried dates in the food processor, adding toasted or raw almonds/cashews/walnuts to them until they are not very sticky, and adding flavors as desired- cinnamon and dried pureed apples, dried cherries, lemon zest and juice…lots of options!

  • Jennifer July 17, 2011, 6:02 pm

I recently tried the Larabars and they are great and very filling!! It’s the kind of snack that will actually hold you over til supper!

  • Jhitomi July 17, 2011, 1:59 pm

wow what a great giveaway. I would especially make use of that stainless steel tin. I love Larabars! I always have one in my tennis bag for those days when I am about to play but need a burst of energy. They don’t have that awful soy protein taste that other bars have, they actually are yummy!

  • rebecca williams July 17, 2011, 12:59 pm

I ate alot of LÄRABAR bars when I was pregnant with my daughter. Ginger Snap is one of my favorites. thanks for the chance to win!

  • Chelly July 17, 2011, 11:55 am

That is SO funny you give ds ‘cookies’ that’s the same thing I used to do!! I would give her A rice cracker and call it a cookie. heehee. Now I’l make gluten free and sugar free cookies or raw cookies every once in a while and she loves those. I would like to get a stack of those snack bags as we go through so many plastic baggies. What do you wash them with?

I haven’t even heard of any of the other things except the LaraBars. Yum! My favorite used to be cherry pie but I had a pb&j last week. It was DELICIOUS!! Now that I think about it…. I bought two and stashed the other somewhere so I’m going to have to go find it :D

  • amy v July 17, 2011, 11:54 am

i love Lara Bars-their apple pie ones are great!

I love to take GoGo SqueeZ Apple/Strawberry, Applesauce when camping!
The pouches do not need to be refrigerated and are another healthy and delicious alternative for hungry campers!

  • Terri S. July 17, 2011, 8:57 am

No, I have not tried any of these products yet. They all look ideal for our camping trips. The ECOlunchpod is perfect to put berries in for my granddaughter. I want to try the Bananamon Funky Monkey Snacks & many of the terrific flavors of Larabar granola bars. My pancake lovers here definitely want to try the Batter Blaster organic pancake mix in a can. I have my cast iron pan ready. :)

  • EMMA L HORTON July 17, 2011, 7:56 am

NO…I HAVE NOT TRIED ANY OF THESE PRODUCTS, BUT MY DAUGHTER AND HER FAMILY GO CAMPING ALL THE TIME AND I AM SURE SHE COULD USE THESE OR MAY EVEN ALREADY USE THEM

  • Sarah July 17, 2011, 5:32 am

I haven’t tried any of these products yet, but I really want to. I’ve really been meaning to try Batter Blaster lately.

  • Carol L July 17, 2011, 3:35 am

Some great ideas. I’ve tried the Funky Monkey pouches. Loved them and so did grand son. I’ll have to share this with my daughter and her hubby for when they go camping with kids. Thanks for the opportunity.

For dd we love the pouches of pureed fruits/veggies (like the Peter Rabbit, Elle’s Kitchen, Happy Baby, etc) to take along on trips. They don’t have to be refrigerated and are small enough to toss in your purse. For dh, I make him unsalted sunflower seeds. He likes to chew on something while driving to stay awake and these are perfect since they have no salt! He gets bad migraines when he eats too many seeds and that doesn’t mesh with having to drive all day!

  • Tamara Sz July 17, 2011, 2:09 am

I love Larabars for on the go! Great travel/camping food!

  • Adri July 16, 2011, 11:47 pm

You can’t go camping and forget the graham crackers, marshmallows, and Hershey bars. No camping trip would be complete without S’mores.

  • JLJMommy July 16, 2011, 11:37 pm

Our must have camping foods involve marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers. Also licorice, sunflower seeds and beef jerky. Great ideas! We did make lots of pancakes on our last camping trip… yum!

  • Kimberly July 16, 2011, 11:36 pm

I have had the Batter Blaster, it was very yummy!

  • Stacie July 16, 2011, 11:29 pm

These products look like they would be a great addition to the trips I have planned this summer! We are going camping at least once, I would love to try the pancake mix especially.

  • T Rex Mom July 16, 2011, 11:18 pm

I LOVE snack taxi’s. I have two of the almost smallest size and we use them for every outing. One is always filled with Pirate Booty. The kids know exactly which one it is and if they see the polka dots of the bag, they cry for PB. I have been wanting to get more. I purchased ours at our local co-op retail store.

The stainless steel snack cup looks really interesting, too. And my son will eat just about anything freeze dried but balks at the same exact things when they are fresh.

Lastly, our friends just finished the 20,000 ft + climb up Mt. McKinley and I think they took some of those chicken wraps with them. They also said they were pretty good.

  • Meagan July 16, 2011, 8:49 pm

I always bring bars and individual peanut butter packs when traveling. I love bringing Larabars! They are so good!

  • Heather July 16, 2011, 7:52 pm

I hopeful I can find somewhere those items.. My 3 boys love camping like me do.. only we can camping out while summer time and little fall time before winter coming.. no fun.. lol..

  • Michelle July 16, 2011, 7:20 pm

I haven’t heard of these items! Thanks for sharing! We are new parents, so we are totally new to packing for more than us. I really like the batter blaster! Granola bars are always a must for us, but we’ll be looking much more closely at the ingredients now that we are thinking for a little one too! Great suggestion on the larabars!

  • Crunchy Beach Mama July 16, 2011, 5:17 pm

Some great ideas Julie! I will have to remember all these options when the boys all go camping one night and leave me home to have the house to myself. Ahhh luxury.

    Those pancakes sound pretty cool!

  • Robin H July 16, 2011, 1:39 pm

Never heard of any of these options… thanks for sharing! Will come in useful for our trip we have planned in October!
When we have long drives we make sure to have string cheese, go gurt, and go go squeeze sauces in hand.

  • Amanda C July 16, 2011, 12:08 pm

We have a few SnackTaxi bags and we LOVE them. That stainless steel snack container would be so handy! I am thinking right now of all of the different ways it could be used. And I am dying to try those Funky Monkey snacks. You cannot buy them around here but have heard such great things about them online.

  • Selina Rupers July 16, 2011, 12:02 pm

I’ve never tried any of these, and haven’t been camping in a long, long time! But I always love to take the popcorn packages that you roast over the campfire. So much fun!

  • Valerie Scheer July 16, 2011, 10:58 am

What great information! We just went camping for the first time as a family to Rocky Neck. We let the kids pre-make some of their snack baggies with what they thought would be fun camp food (ie; trail mix, crackers and peanut butter, etc). Having a 6, 3 and 2 year old made it a lot of work! I love the pancake idea!!! We are definitely going to check out the ECOlunchpod!! That looks very helpful! Thank you for the great ideas!! It’s always refreshing to see what other people do to break up the monotony of my usual ideas! We are thinking of camping at Hampton Beach State Park next. =) ~Valerie Scheer

  • debbie m July 16, 2011, 10:30 am

Great gift packs!! We have a Snack Taxi and LOVE it!! Great for children’s snacks on a daily basis. I also use them for snacks at school when I teach. We have tried the Lara bar and it is yummy. Have yet to try the others, but would like to. Camping rocks!!!

  • Dawn July 16, 2011, 9:30 am

I haven’t tried any of these products, but they all sound so amazing. I have 2 little girls and camping is high on our list to accomplish this summer yet – these items would make my life so much easier when planning and packing for our adventure.
Thanks for the opportunity to win and try them out.

  • Mary Worley July 16, 2011, 8:42 am

I have eaten the Larabars and we love them. When we camp I try to do lots of boxes and individual packs (bags) for everyone. My hubby is a diabetic and I try to make snacks easy to identify per person with different colors, or types of containers.

  • Laverne ohearn July 16, 2011, 8:34 am

All the above sounds great, I also love to take dehydrated fruit mixed with nuts when camping. Also a campfire recipe book that has recipes to make everything over open fire.

  • Cynthia Shern July 16, 2011, 8:33 am

    shern.cynthia@yahoo.com
Planning a fishing trip beginning of next month and could really use a sweet item like this!! ;)

  • Tori July 16, 2011, 8:32 am

Don’t forget the smores things!! We always keep the chocolate in the cooler so it will not melt.

I have not tried any of the above products but have been thinking to try the batter blaster that would be very nice on a camping trip!!

  • Shawna Johnsen July 16, 2011, 8:29 am

Actually planning a camping trip before school starts back up, would LOVE to win! :D
