I have definitely had to experiment with my laundry routines with cloth diapering to get rid of that constant rash my son suffered. I’m happy to say he continues to be rash-free.

Over our camping trip and the past few weeks, we’ve been using Nellie’s Natural Laundry Soda. I am liking their ingredients are clearly disclosed :  Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Silicate, Sodium Chloride, Citric Acid, and Coconut oil based surfactants.

(Oh, and don’t you love the Nellie’s character on the packaging!? You should visit their website and check out the interactive home page!)

One thing I have to stress is that your diaper laundry should NOT smell like anything when it’s clean. I made that mistake. Thinking that if it smelled a little like detergent, that was okay because isn’t detergent “clean”? No, a detergent smell means buildup. Buildup can mean trapped ammonia in your diapers, and will probably cause rashes and perhaps leaks. Nellie’s is hypoallergenic, so there is no scent and it’s residue-free!

Nellie’s Natural Laundry Soda was easy to dissolve when I handwashed my diapers, so I know it’s dissolving quickly in the washer too. It dissolves in both hot or cold water.

The other great part is that for even a large load of laundry, you only need about 1 Tablespoon per wash! Meaning a load of laundry will cost only about $.20 per scoop!

We’ve been very happy using Nellie’s on our cloth diapers the past month! Have you tried Nellie’s yet?

Nellie’s has several other products I would love to try (some even come in these delightful vintage-looking tins!):

  • Laundry Nuggets (pre-wrapped scoops of Nellie’s Laundry Soda)
  • Oxy Brightener
  • Dish Powder
  • Dish Nuggets
  • Bamboo cloths and towels

I like to buy clear and natural soap, but I get discouraged because I don’t feel as though the products clean my toddler’s dirty clothes very well. I have seen many home made soaps that I am thinking of giving a try. I would LOVE to find some detergent that was really good. Thank you.

I am partial to powder detergent recently although we were a liquid family from the beginning. I have this feeling that powders are better for the clothes and the machine…just my thought. Also, we tend to let clothes and diapers pile up before we was big loads. We need a detergent that can handle that and dissolve well in our water. Thanks.

My laundry routine….put it off until the piles are toppling over… LOL Laundry is an everyday thing around here if we are to have any hope of walking through our home without laundry falling on us. We are a family of 6, with 2 and a half cloth diaper wearers. I am currently on a hunt for a great diaper detergent…and a regular laundry detergent now that I realize all the stuff that is in regular detergent. In the last 4 months we have tried Charlies (son allergic), Tide free and clear (the enzymes worry me), All free and clear (build up), Arm and Hammer (yuck can only describe our results), Publix (multitude of suds), and Dropps (dingy dipes). We also use some Dawn and OxyClean from time to time. We have soft water and nothing seems to be rinsing clean without a multitude of rinses which really seems to cut into our ability to save money by cloth diapering. Today I stripped my washer AGAIN, and I will be trying Crunchy Clean.

As of right now, I use RnG on our Cloth Diapers and homemade powder detergent on our clothing, linen and unpapertowels. I’d like to try other detergents on our cloth to see if there’s a difference and if I’m using what’s right or if there’s something better.

I only use hot water on our diapers, everything else is cold water. And we line dry everything! I wish I had more substantial drying space in the laundry room for winter though so I could use the dryer less when it’s frozen out.

For cloth diapers, I hand rinse individually as we go. Then everything goes in the washer for soak, long wash, and two rinses. I normally like Biokleen, but Im trying to branch out and am trying Vaska right now.
For clothes, I just do a regular wash with one rinse unless my rinse water loooks really grimy. Then add another rinse.

Found some good deals that might make it worth the switch if it worked for us (Charlie’s didn’t). Thanks for the chance!

I usually buy the cheapest detergent I can find for our regular laundry but use RnG for our cloth diapers. I’ve been battling ammonia stink lately and am looking for an alternative to Rng for our diapers. I’ve heard great things about Nellies!

Since dd is only in diapers overnight, I only do diapers once a week (sometimes twice depending on how many times she has an accident). I run a small load – cold pre-rinse, hot wash, cold rinse x2 w/ RnG as the detergent. I really like Clean B but she’s so behind, I don’t know when I’ll get to use it again! LOL I used Clean B for all our laundry. Now I am using bioclean or dropps. Once those are gone, I am thinking of trying to make my own for our regular laundry.

For diapers I’ve been using my own soap. Fels, borax, soda. For clothes we buy cheap. My hubs puts way too much liquid in too! He makes all the towels stinky with build up! I water the detergent down now so even if he gets too much it’s better than full strength. spottedjagiwar at yahoo dot com

I love Nellie’s — it’s the only detergent we used with cloth diapers! And they came out SO clean it was unbelievable and the natural ingredients were great for my baby’s diapers! LOVE IT!

Too be honest, I’m a bad CD mom. I use Tide Free and Clear (though I HAVE NOT had ANY issues). I prerinse, then hot wash/cold rinse (I put detergent in at that step), and then another rinse. I then hang dry the diapers on a drying rack on the balcony. I do smell my diapers after they come out of the wash to make sure they don’t smell like anything.

I still haven’t found a detergent that I really like for our diapers. I’ve used allens natural, charlies, rockin green, vaska, and lulu’s. I think that’s it! I’ve just recently switched back to charlies as it was what we started with and I didn’t seem to have a problem with stinkies until I started switching around!

  • Monica Pelletier August 13, 2011, 8:13 pm

We use Rockin’ Green for diapers and Method for our clothes. We switched to Method because it clearly says “4 pumps” on the bottle. When we used detergent that you poured, it would disappear quickly. It took me 5 years of marraige to figure out that hubby was just pouring and pouring and pouring detergent instead of putting the tiny concentrate amount into the machine. Now he is fully schooled in “4 pumps” LOL!

    Yay to no rash!!

We use trader joe’s powder detergent. I prefer biokleen but it’s just so much more expensive and as you know with a toddler I need to do laundry often. Especially when my toddler is a girl who even a speck of dirt means it goes in the wash basket. :sigh:

I’ve considered making my own laundry detergent. I’ll let you know how it goes if I do it!

I liked they way you did this. I was straightforward and honestly, fun to read. Thanks.

You’ve so tempted me with this soap. I really like their containers, too. Those would be fun to reuse.

We’re big Charlie’s Soap fans. We use it on all our laundry except cloth diapers. I still like RnG for that. We get the Charlies in a bucket. If we could get RnG in bulk for the amount we get Charlies, I might switch over.

I have recently changed to triple rinsing my diapers after the wash cycle. Sounds like over kill but when I don’t I think I can still smell something on them.

And YEAH for no rash. As I was hanging my diapers today I was thinking of you and wondering if A was still rash free. This is great news! You should feel so proud for figuring it out and fixing it.

When she gets her diaper change I make sure to rinse it out ok.
In it goes in the 5 Gallon Bucket with a bit of water.
Hot Laundry Cycle with detergent (ran out of EcoNuts so using Arm and Hammer)
Do another hot cycle wash and finish it out with a cold rinse cycle.
If the sun is out in WA then we do a hang dry, if not Low Temp in Dryer.

We do a pre-soak in cold water, then a hot wash with a cold rinse. Lately we have allen’s natural, but I’m running out, so hoping to win. Over the summer, we’ve been lucky enough to hang the diapers outside on the line, which has been a big help in bleaching out any residual stains.
