Chubby Elephant Fitted Cloth Diaper Review

In the Realm (and it is a Realm, with a capital R!) of handmade cloth diapers, the options can get overwhelming.

I’ve been blessed to always have partnered with very high quality cloth diaper makers. When Laura from Chubby Elephant diapers sent me a complimentary fitted All-In-Two diapers to review, I was excited to check out what she had to offer.

There’s so many reasons to support WAHM-made cloth diapers. 1) the detail put into each item 2) one-of-a-kind creations 3) personalized customer service 4) variety of patterns/prints.

Chubby Elephant cloth diapers are simply top-notch in my book!

For one thing, Laura must work at warp speed, because when I told her in July that I was having a Peter Rabbit Themed Birthday Party, she immediately obliged my whims, got some Peter Rabbit fabric… and I had a diaper at my doorstep in days!

The print was perfect for our Peter Rabbit party, and as the day was so hot, I let him run around in the diaper the whole time. It was adorable. (The AI2 does not need a cover, so that worked out great!).

My son’s custom cloth diaper is made with 100% interlock woven fabric, although you can get diapers made out of knit. There’s a hidden PUL layer and an inner microchamois layer.

The petal-style soaker has a snap-in doubler and creates 3 layers of cotton velour and 6 layers of organic bamboo fleece! It’s luxuriously soft!

All the fabrics are plush and squishy. Our Chubby Elephant diaper is used EVERY time it shows up from the laundry and the fabrics have continued to stay soft and fluffy!

Laura generally stocks size Large, which fits 17-35 pounds. My one year old needed this size as at one year he was already 22 pounds (he’s now about 24!). So, being in the middle of this size, I can say the diaper fits him great with room to grow. The snaps can overlap so I imagine a baby with a tinier waist than my son’s would still get a great fit.

My favorite part of the diaper is the wide back elastic that prevents rolling and contains the messes (of which we have plenty!).

Performance-wise I could not be happier. I have used some hidden PUL diapers that tended to get a little damp (not horrible but I would notice it a smidge) if left on more than a couple hours. I talked to Laura about this via email to know what to expect, and she told me something I didn’t know: “the nature of hidden PUL AI2’s is to have wicking on the outer cotton print if the soaker is too saturated. It should only happen at the legs, though. If the liquid is coming straight through the front of the diaper, then something else is wrong. Wicking happens at the legs because the sewing machine needle pierces tiny holes in the PUL when making the diaper. I run my shells through the dryer on high to help seal the holes every time I wash diapers.”

The great news is our Chubby Elephant diaper has NEVER felt a little damp in the least!
