Make your clothes make a difference

I have a constant struggle between wanting to be comfortable and wanting to be classy. Wanting to look good but not let the goods take over our lives. Wanting beautiful clothes but a balanced budget. Ahhh! Fashion! Just add it to the list of things moms juggle, right?! In our quest to build a happy, strong home, fashion isn’t our primary focus, but I write about women’s styles regularly because I need to wear clothes and I like to feel good in those clothes. And, mom fashion can be balanced. There are ways to make your clothes make a difference.

Ways to make your clothes make a difference

Focus on comfort. In the battle between comfort and classy, there doesn’t have to be just one winner! If you’re ducking into another aisle because you wore those stained sweatpants to the store but spotted someone you know, well that’s just UN-comfortable! If those classy clothes make you feel itchy, tight, or bulgy, then what is the point!? Comfort doesn’t negate classy! Select materials that drape well, with stretch for comfort, and a finish that feels and looks upscale. The way fabrics today can be blended, brushed, and woven means that organic cottons and hemps (those oh-so-comfy fibers!) can have a luxuriously heavy weight, a polished sheen, or an interesting texture.

Like this Annexi hemp fabric yoga pant from prAna. I mean, really it’s a yoga pant! But the black herringbone texture and pattern give it a modern and fashionable edge. So along with comfort, you get versatility too! The material is lightweight so you could wear it to your gym class but… the style is so fresh and appealing. Made from a hemp / recycled poly blend with a touch of spandex and a generously wide waistband, there is nothing but comfort here. Yet the classic details like print, back welt pockets, and embroidery make it a piece you could wear to work and then out for an afternoon trail walk!sustainable clothes make a difference

Make your impact count. The textile industry has a huge impact on our world and environment from harvest, to manufacturing, and on to huge amounts of waste each year. So, the clothing choices you make do matter. I look for small businesses, mom-owned or -created business, and brands that focus on sustainable practices. Choosing quality fabrics helps in making your style comfortable, and it also helps when clothes are made sustainably and with recycled materials. Which is exactly what prAna’s mission is with every style and fabric choice!

Hemp is “Kind of a Wonder Crop”! Find out why hemp matters by watching this video here – I learned so many cool facts about hemp – you’ll especially love hearing about how it actually interacts with our skin!

And if you’re curious, check out why organic cotton matters too:

Pick the good goods! Here’s a little secret to making your clothes make a difference: get the good stuff. I used to buy tons of clothes at low price points, but then found myself always saying “I have nothing to wear.” I’d ditch piles of clothing every year – what a waste! Fact: you don’t need tons of clothes to look good. Minimalism is in, ladies! One year, I wore the same dress for a month to prove I didn’t need so much. I promise you, nobody ever noticed I wore the same. exact. dress for a full month!!

Instead of having a closet jammed full of sweaters, pick three or four that work well for your lifestyle. See this cute little sweater? It’s the Liana from prAna (I love how that rhymes!). With it’s fancy crochet-like knit and asymmetrical styling, I can dress it up or down, much like those Annexi pants. I can wear it over a tank or under a blazer. To the gym or to a party or event. Made of organic cotton and hemp, it’s deliciously comfortable too.

I realize not everyone has the same budget for clothing, but consider where you put your dollars. A good piece of clothing should last years, both in durability and in style. Buying fewer pieces, allows you to afford nicer pieces. When I buy pieces I really love (with comfort and versatility built in), I don’t have to buy as many pieces to make my wardrobe work. And, when I buy sustainable fabrics and fair trade clothing, I’m supporting countless communities around the world – people just struggling to get by. prAna makes it their mission to use sustainable manufacturing practices, and give back to the communities that help them create their clothing. Now that makes me happy when I look in my closet.
