So you have the sun protection clothing. You have hats. You have sunglasses. But there will still be some part of your darling baby exposed to the sun. You can’t exactly put them in a parka!

I did not want to use run-of-the-mill sunscreen on my baby, because most contain so many chemicals. I checked out a few at the natural food store, and I still didn’t understand some of the ingredients, so I was cautious.

Then Sweetbottoms Baby Boutique sent me a bottle of Loving Naturals SPF 30+ sunscreen, and I am hooked!

Loving Naturals is, as the name says 100% natural. It uses non-nano zinc oxide as the first line of defense against the sun.

Non-nano! What is this a sci-fi blog? No, non-nano simply means that the zinc oxide has larger particles, so it mixes well with the other ingredients and can’t be inhaled (which would be bad).

The rest of the ingredients read like a list from a soothing spa treatment: grape seed oil, organic sunflower oil, organic plum kernel oil, organic macadamia nut oil, and so forth. (Actually, kinda sounds like a yummy cookie recipe!). Notice most of the ingredients are organic as well!

The lotion went on my baby’s skin so smoothly, and feels like a massaging oil for babies! It’s a non-greasy formula – although it is mostly oil, so it DOES feel a bit oily until you rub it into the skin. I also found it to be a bit runny, so just be careful when you squeeze it out of the bottle!

We really liked this lotion. The few times I have been used it (we’ve had a rash of bad weather!), he has not gotten any sunburn!

I would say there are two drawbacks to this lotion. One, it needs to be reapplied every 1-2 hours. Which is understandable, since it’s chemical-free, but two, it’s on the expensive side at $9.99 for a 2.7 ounce bottle! However, I think avoiding chemicals AND sun exposure is worth it. And if you combine this sunscreen with other forms of sun protection, you shouldn’t have to bathe your child in the lotion.

Sweetbottoms Baby Boutique doesn’t just carry sunscreen though! You should check out their full line of cloth diapers, natural products for baby (carriers, pacifiers, etc), mama (breastfeeding, clothing, diaper bags), home (laundry, cloth napkins), and great gift items! And, every order over $20 gets a free sample of the buyer’s choice! Fun!

How do you protect your child from the sun? What brands of sunscreen do you use?
