Recreating our backyard garden #DigIn

I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Home Depot to share our thoughts and tips on gardening, as well as receive a promotional item to help improve our backyard!

I grew up in backyards. Playing under trees, weeding a big garden, tag on the lawn at dusk. The backyard is where it’s at!

In our backyard, we picnic, grill, lounge, read, and garden. Unfortunately, with the arrival of baby 2.0 last summer, the gardens were on the back burner and left in a bit of disarray over winter.

This year, we want the backyard gardens to be engaging, entertaining, and productive. As a blogger for the Home Depot Garden Club, I’m excited to share our backyard garden project with you from start to finish!

Our backyard is full of steep hills (as you can see above, our son is sitting at the top of one, and the current garden is below to the left). We’re excited to restructure our backyard to define our growing space and create attractive boundaries for a neater landscape.

We decided to build a raised garden bed as our major project this spring. Raised beds are attractive, and also better for plants. The soil is less compacted because you fill in the bed yourself, and you don’t step into the garden and pack the dirt down. So the soil stays aerated. The dimension of a typical raised bed is no more than four feet across so you can reach in two feet in each side to tend the plants without disturbing the soil.

To prepare…hubby researched raised garden bed plans, material and lumber online… we considered building our own beds from lumber. So we looked at pine versus cedar. Ultimately, cedar was our best choice because the oils in cedar wood are naturally resistant to rot and bugs.

The Home Depot Garden Club has an easy tutorial for raised beds, and there’s a raised garden bed kit that fits nicely into the space we have. There’s almost no tools or hardware needed, and the kit is less expensive and time consuming than building from scratch, so this will help make our project easier to complete!

We, (well, my husband), also prepped the ground by removing sod, old fencing and garden posts, and leveling ground.

We’ll be putting the new raised beds on the south side of the house to take advantage of sunlight, and will extend our existing beds out a bit further to increase planting space.

There’s so much excitement in our house as we gather materials, shop and prep for this project. Especially since our toddler loves helping Daddy out in the yard! We can’t wait to get started!

I can't wait to see what you put INTO the beds! i would love to have beds, but my husband insists on doing it all in ground. and then the voles attack, and we lose half the crops. it's annoying. The raised bed idea is so nice for people with small kids or with not a lot of space- I would assume it also keeps down the weeds ( I Hate weeds)

I can't wait to see the finished results! I'd be excited too, I love going to Home Depot. I could spend all my money there, and sometimes I feel like I have since we have been remodeling for 10 years, LOL! My yard is kind of like the last place I need to work on after we wrap up the interior remodels next month. I live on wetlands and my yard is more like an overgrown forest than a manicured lawn, LOL! I need help!

I want to see the finished project! I love using raised beds because they are smaller and easier to weed. I have done that for my herb garden.
