Turtles & Owls: Some of your favorite books

One reason I didn’t decorate my son’s room when he was newborn was that I wanted to give him time to develop interests and then decorate around what excited him.

Of course, cars still occupy a large portion of his day and vocabulary. But I’m pleased to say that animals have become a huge fascintion with him too. He can name most of the barnyard and domestic animals, and make most of their noises already.

Since we went camping so much this summer, I’ve also been teaching him the woodland animals too! He loves to say “moosie,” and takes his Kinderglo night light with him to bed each night (and camping – it is the BEST camping accessory for babies!).

We have favorite books we read repeatedly at bedtime and throughout the day, but on a whim a couple weeks ago, I pulled out a few new ones from the shelf: All About Turtles and Owl Babies. I figured they’d be great reads for our Labor Day camping trip to Emerald Lake!

Turns out, my son became engrossed with the turtle book, especially snapping turtles! He calls ALL turtles “snapping” … only it’s hilarious because it comes out sounding like “Slap-Me!” He even makes snapping gestures with his hands and says, “Snap! Snap!” when he sees turtle pictures.

And owls – he actually started liking owls when I read him The Kissing Hand (one of my favorites!). He would say “Whoo, Whoo!” When I started reading Owl Babies to him, he didn’t show much interest, but then he noticed that I have owl salt and pepper shakers on the table, and now he always wants to play with them! (yes, owls are one of my favs!).

Here’s some fun video of him saying “Snapping!” and generally being goofy about his favorite animals!

… do I sense a woodland room decor theme coming up? Time will tell!

What is your child’s room decor like, and how did you decide on a look/theme?

The kids don't like owl babies. I wish Bebe Sister did for obvious reasons. However, the kissing hand and the sequel Pocket Full of Kisses is a bit hit with T Rex. All of these we checked out from the library. We opted for a space theme in T Rex's room partially since it was what we had on hand and partially because he loves looking at the moon so much. He says good night to Gene Cernan (last man on the moon) and the American flag every night.

Fun posting. I'll come back to see the video when I have sound.
