Avoid a Tragedy with BackUpBetter

A few weeks before my baby was born, I almost ran over my mother.

Thankfully, I didn’t actually hit her, but just backed into the front of her car. Why? It was the perfect storm of being in a rush, making assumptions (I thought she had parked in the street!), and… blind spots (her small car was parked in my blind spot!). I still shudder to think if she had somehow been between the two cars when I started backing up. Thankfully, she was not.

Back-up accidents in driveways are actually quite common. According to KidsandCars.com, “In the U.S. at least fifty (50) children are being backed over by vehicles EVERY week.” That’s a scary statistic! And sad to say, most of these accidents are in the child’s driveway, by their own parents… and with large vehicles like SUVs and minivans.

Recently, I tested out a product that can help save lives and reduce the number of avoidable backup accidents. Back Up Better products are car safety mirrors and lenses that increase your viewing field when you back up. I’m proud to say this company is based in my own state of Connecticut, and offers a simple, inexpensive solution: with the Back Up Better Rearview Lens, blind spots can be eliminated.

Back Up Better makes lenses, mirrors, and backup alarms to help prevent accidents. Here’s a little more about the lenses and mirrors:

The Back Up Better Lens is a thin, flexible plastic lens. Just clean your rear window, dampen the lens and apply it to the glass. This lens dramatically expands your normal line of vision in an SUV, minivan, truck, or station wagon.

It adheres easily with a little water to the rear window of your SUV, minivan, truck or station wagon (they do not work for small, compact cars because of the angled rear windows). Less than 1/16″ thick, the lens can be easily repositioned or removed. My husband applied these to our minivan within minutes.

The lens allows us to see objects in our blind spots, closer to the rear of the vehicle, and in all four directions (up/down, left/right) than we could see previously. It’s shocking how far a child can be from a car, but still be invisible to the driver! That’s why it’s so important to have these safety products for your cars – it’s too easy for an accident to happen!

Back Up Better convex Add-On Mirrors are easily attached to your side mirrors. The Add-On Mirrors increase your viewing field alongside the vehicle, more than tripling your side view! Using Peel & Stick adhesive, they affix quickly to your side mirrors for added safety and confidence while driving. (Just remember that objects ARE closer than they appear!). They come in three sizes for different sized vehicles.

And how do they perform? Well, hubby and I got a thorough testing of these mirrors and lenses on our recent trip to New York City! Trust me, driving in the city is no joke. The traffic is horrendous, and people are always just walking out into the street in front and behind you even when the crossing signs say stop! Ah, New Yorkers! Having these lenses and mirrors, my husband said was a great bonus while driving in city conditions. He could really tell a difference in side and rear visibility with these products!

I’ve also been driving the minivan since we installed the Back Up Better products, and it does make a big difference. You have to get used to having two mirrors to glance into on the sides, and remember to use the Add-On Mirror when backing up, but soon it becomes second nature. I really like the rear window lens, because we have a small neighborhood dog I’m always afraid of backing up over because he wanders around our yard a lot. Now I can see if he’s behind me and feel secure I’m not about to hit him.

I think everyone should invest some money into these Back Up Better safety products! I am sure this company is saving lives and preventing injuries daily! For our family, we’ve really appreciated the increased sense of relief we have, knowing we can see better when backing up!

I always back into my driveway and have a spot the tot sticker on my driver window to remind me to check around my car. I have know children who have been killed by cars and couldn't imagine.
