A Year Of Cloth Diapers

We’ve actually been cloth diapering for three and a half years. However, since this is baby’s birthday week, I’m looking back at the past year of cloth diapering. In photos. Lots of photos! Some you’ve seen in reviews, and others are fun ones that didn’t make the review post cuts!

It’s interesting to see how our cloth diapering changed throughout the first year of life!

Our diapering journey began with newborn cloth diaper rentals for twelve weeks. He outgrew them in eight! We rented six BumGenius AIOs and six Tot Bots AIOs. Read more about newborn cloth diaper rentals! I recommend it!

In addition to all-in-one newborn diapers, we had a few fitteds (Thirsties, BumCovered and Clover) with a couple Bummis diaper covers (and prefolds!).

I especially loved our Thirsties AIO size 1 and Applecheeks pocket size 1, as both of these fit from newborn (7 lbs, 7 ounces) up to about 14-16 pounds so they took us through a transitional period when newborn diapers were too small but one-sizes were not fitting great yet. I plan to get more of each I ever have another squishy newbie! You can see the difference in the Thirsties fit between the two photos below:

Then the fun began as he grew bigger and lots of our previous diapers started to fit him (and I got to try out a bunch of new diapers!).

We tried gDiapers hybrids for travel and light usage (as well as some cute matchy-matchy stuff going on here!).

Of course, a swim diaper from iPlay!

Since our baby grew rapidly out of newborn and smaller diapers, we have been using almost all one-sized diapers and covers. Once he started sitting up and standing, we had better (yet more challenging) photo opps!

A bigger baby meant longer sleeping and heavier wetting at night. So… the Red Barn Nifty Nappy Heavy Doody has come into play for night time diapering! Paired with a Zookaboo cloth diaper cover… couldn’t be better!

For awhile we had two in cloth. Then one in cloth and one in cloth trainers! Now we’re pretty much done with cloth for our older son except for cloth trainers like the Flip training system during nap and bedtimes. (YAY! Sorta. It’s always hard to say goodbye to cloth!).

I’ll admit that this time around, I’ve become more dependent on all-in-one diapers like the BumGenius Elemental, Blueberry Basix AIO and SmartBottoms Smart One 3.0 (more to come on that!). So easy when you’re trying to wrangle two kids. I’d love to add more AIOs to my stash!

Of course, all year long, we have enjoyed the cuteness of cloth diapers when he’s playing and rolling about. We just love the fun a unique print can bring to the cloth diapering experience! From science for my chemistry teacher hubby, to bicycles and dinosaurs… even patriotic diapers for the 4th of July! Yes, we do dress for the occasion around here!

I can’t wait to share his custom birthday diaper with you all! That will truly cap off one year of cloth diapering!

Has your cloth diapering changed over the past year? Do you foresee a change in what kinds of diapers you’ll be using in the next year?
