Digital Mom, Digital Family Planning

So, it’s been a couple months since I told you about Lady-Comp Baby – that nifty digital gadget for natural family planning! Seems like our whole world got technified, so why not family planning, right?

After using the Lady-Comp Baby machine for the past four cycles, here’s what I know:

First, if you have a hard time remembering to take your temp every morning, this will help! Lady-Comp Baby has a built in alarm clock that wakes you gently, and then you remember to take your temp! You get a 3 hour window as well. So if during the week, you wake at 6 for work, take your temp right when you wake up. But then on the weekend, if you sleep in till 8, that’s okay too. The machine will monitor the times you’re taking your temps, and adjust its tracking.

The point is, it’s very reliable, because it makes adjustments for the varying time of day, and accounts for outlying temperatures. Clinical tests have shown Lady-Comp to be 99.3% accurate! And as I mentioned in my previous post, it’s a “smart” machine in that every month, it uses data from your past months too, to “learn” your particular cycle and give a more accurate reading each time! Can’t say that for a pee-stick test, can you?

Next, if you’re having difficulty conceiving, Lady-Comp Baby can provide important information about your cycles. For instance, the machine indicated that I ovulate around days 10, 11, and 12 of my cycle, which is a bit earlier than most people. Important information, wouldn’t you say? If there are other fertility problems, like luteal phase defect (not enough days of elevated temps post-ovulation), the monitor will indicate that as well. Again, very important to know for fertility treatment.

Even if you don’t have problems with fertility, but want to use a natural family planning method, the Lady-Comp Baby makes it easier than peeing on a stick every day! In fact, for my fertility testing, the doctor insisted I use the digital pee stick tests and didn’t want to know about my awesome Lady-Comp Baby machine. Guess what happened? The ClearBlue smilie test (which cost me $50!!!) NEVER registered a smilie face from day 9-15. So I had to go in for a blood test, and the doctor told me, “Oh sorry, we missed it! You already ovulated!” Now I have to wait until next month to get certain tests and procedures done. But if they had let me use the Lady-Comp Baby as an indicator, I would’ve probably been right on target!

After four months of using Lady-Comp Baby, I returned the device to the company so they could collect my data. I have to say this part is both a pro and con.

Pro – I loved that Jessie called me after downloading my data to talk about my results. Having a REAL person on the phone to go over what they saw in the readings was so helpful! I could ask questions about cycle information and learn what certain terminology meant, right then and there. They ship you back your machine with a printout of the information you can take to your doctor.

Con – While not the worst thing in the world, paying to ship the machine and then not inputting data for 5-6 days was not ideal. I hope Lady-Comp creates a way to upload the data from home, which would be convenient.

I love that Lady-Comp Baby is a natural method of family planning, which means I don’t have to be on hormonal medications to prevent pregnancy. I just watch the green, yellow, and red lights to know when I have the highest fertility, and use a backup plan on those days… well, that’s if I didn’t want to get pregnant! (Note, there are two versions: Lady-Comp for avoiding pregnancy, and Lady-Comp Baby which has additional software to aid in acheiving pregnancy. The regular Lady-Comp can actually be upgraded at any time for an additional fee, so no need to buy two machines!).

The Lady-Comp Baby even has a built in pregnancy test! If you’ve been entering the dates of your cycles and intercourse, and taking regular temp readings, then about 15 days post ovulation, the Lady-Comp Baby will indicate a probable pregnancy. 18 days post ovulation, it indicates confirmed pregnancy (if, of course, you haven’t started your cycle!). So… I’ll be sure to let you know when those lights give me the positive news!

Until then, what are your thoughts about digital family planning? Have you tried it yet? Are you interested?

I like the idea of natural family planning (even though I don't need it myself, stupid infertility) BUT a device like this would be totally what I need because I need constant reminders. And I agree with you on the part about uploading from home. That would be a great feature.

Use the ClearBlue sticks and the Lady Comp, or are you? I am using the ClearBlue Fertility Monitor along with the ClearBlue Digital Ovualtion sticks! I really want a different digital device because I am tired of peeing on those darn sticks! I'm going to the doctor on the 25th hopefully he will give me some much needed and helpful advise! Good luck!
