Today we’re all about the shorties – or, soakers. Shorties are wool soakers that look like little pull-ups – they are really cute! (and for girls, you can even get “skirties!”).
I’m so excited because today’s feature is another WAHM / Etsy seller! I was thrilled to work with Melissa from the Etsy shop Forty41 for this event – she even let me choose my own colors from her selection! (She does a lot of customs, but keeps ready-made wool covers in stock, too). When her soaker / cover arrived, it was beautifully packaged with tissue, ribbon, and a sample of grapefruit scented Eucalan wool wash (sorry, I get SO excited about packages, that I tear right into them and forget to take photos – but it was a gorgeous presentation! Fantastic for gift-giving!).
Check out this beautiful blue and orange stripe soaker she sent me – two of my favorite colors together! Don’t you love it!? And very soft – you can tell Melissa chooses high quality sweaters to upcycle into long and short woolies!
Melissa was super helpful with sizing – I thought I needed an XL, but she talked me down to a large, and boy am I glad! Since my baby has been thinning out in the waist a bit lately, this large actually has room to grow. I might have been able to go medium, but I’m glad there’s room to grow so I can use this cover for a long time! And since the rise on this cover is generous, the diapering capabilities are not at all compromised. Bottom line – listen to Melissa – she knows what she’s talking about!
More on listening to Melissa: the first couple times I tried my Forty41 cover, it got damp quickly, so I immediately asked Melissa what I was doing wrong – I knew it had to be user error (i.e., My Fault!). I had been snapping the baby’s onesie over the cover, and Melissa told me this was causing compression leakage – as the onesie was tightly fitting over the diaper, it was pressing the moisture right through. Once I started leaving the onesie unsnapped or not using the onesie at all, this problem disappeared. From then on, I never had any leakage or dampness issues! Oh, I could tell I had a lot to learn about wool diapering!
Why I love this cover: it’s handmade, upcycled, and has super fun stripes, as well as very soft, and easy to slip on over a prefold or fitted! And, most importantly, sturdy, well-sewn/serged craftsmanship!
Okay – I saved the best for last – at $12.00 for a pair of shorties, and $16.00 for longies, Forty41 has just about the best deals EVER on wool diaper covers – do NOT think you can’t afford wool – you just need to know where to look! Of course, her custom appliqués are $26.00 because of the extreme detailing involved, but that is quite a reasonable price!
About Melissa & Forty41
A WAHM with two children, Melissa credits blogs for helping her discover sewing. After reading DIY and recycling clothing blogs, she started creating clothes for her kids! Sewing quickly became a hobby for her. Her initial foray into making diapers was with fleece covers and pants, but she didn’t like the smell when they got wet. Like some of us, she found wool intimidating, especially the washing part (don’t worry, folks, I’ll talk about that later!). But finally, she bit the bullet and thrifted some wool sweaters. Soon she was making longies and fell in love with wool! What surprised her the most was how much she liked hand-washing the items she made, and the fun of collecting cute sweaters to create soakers and longies. So Forty41 was born (the name of the shop is the house number where she grew up – 4041 – what a great way to use a childhood memory, right?).
Now that Melissa has been sewing wool for awhile, she realizes what a perfect fabric wool is – she has thoroughly researched wool so she is well-versed in how to use it for diapering. (And believe me, I pestered her with questions and she always had an answer!).
Melissa isn’t the only creative force in her family though – her husband’s artistry skills are at work creating the appliqués, view the entire list here (prepare to be amazed!). This airplane one is my favorite!
Don’t forget to check out Forty41 on Facebook – it’s a great way to keep up with Melissa’s creative covers!
