One Year of Blogging

We did it. One year of blogging.

*Confetti-streamers-applause-huzzah-parading-in-the-streets!*

I have actually been blogging since… oh, I don’t know, maybe 2002? I started with LiveJournal when I was getting my teacher certification. Then I moved to Blogger in 2005. I have kept a personal blog off and on over the past 6 years – mostly for poetry, writing tips/prompts. About a month after our baby was born, I decided I had to blog about our family life, otherwise I simply wasn’t going to be motivated to record it all in writing. I dearly love a paper journal, but I type faster than I think (yes, I meant to say that), so online writing suits me.

We initially started our blog as And Baby Makes Three… but after a few months realized that was not going to work after we had another baby. So we renamed ourselves  to align with our URL – A Year With Mom and Dad – this was not intended to mean we would only blog for a year. We chose it because we relate to the characters in the musical A Year With Frog and Toad (you know, the Frog and Toad children’s book series?). I am Toad – spastic and frenetic. Hubby is Frog – cool, calm, and always has a well-thought out plan. We are a great team! Plus, we like to have a seasonally appropriate blog, and we try to develop themes accordingly!

Here are my thoughts on a year of blogging:

  1. Blogging is a lot of work! Planning posts (yes I have a spreadsheet for that!), writing, taking photos to go with the posts. But it has keep me creative, and connected me to so many awesome moms and writers in the blogging community!
  2. Product reviewing was not our original intention. I started out wanting to just share my thoughts on products, because as a new mom I had been so confused about how to register, what to buy, and when… and I sort of evolved into a product reviewer… I am actually surprised that we have been doing so much of it, but the opportunities just keep opening up (and, yes, I have a spreadsheet for this too!). I admit it is so fun to test products, oftentimes before they even hit the market. And I love showing off great WAHMs and interesting finds!
  3. Finding balance is hard for me. I still struggle with how to balance personal blogging with product reviewing. I have tried to meld my product reviews with our personal life so we are not too “info-mercial.” Sometimes I take on too much. Sometimes I spend too much time blogging (I get way too excited about my topics sometimes!). I am working on fine-tuning this year!
  4. Finding my voice is a work in progress. I am pleased I have tried a variety of writing styles on this blog.
  5. I am an eclectic writer (and reader) so I like to change it up once in a while!

  6. Readers are the highlight of my day – Your comments keep me going. You remind me that I can have something important to say, and that I can actually say it. And that someone is listening, empathizing, giving advice…! The best part of blogging is definitely readership!
  7. My husband is my champion! He supports me not only by reading EVERY post, but also by chiming in with his own posts, by editing my posts when I am uncertain, and by sharing my blog with his friends. Honestly, at first I thought he would think I was dorky for wanting to do this blog, but he has been my biggest fan! Thank you, hubby!

We plan to continue blogging about life, our family, parenting, great products. I have considering doing more with YouTube and VLogging… we’ll see! And I’d like to ask you to help us out… tell me what you’d like to get from our blog in year two:

What have been your favorite features or what are you most interested in reading? (cloth diapers, event weeks, reviews, opinions, current events, etc)?

What other topics would you like to see us discuss?

How can we improve your blog reading experience with us!?

What questions do you have for us? I will try to answer them in upcoming blog posts! I need writing prompts sometimes!

We welcome any and all constructive comments as we craft our writing and aim for another great year in blogging!

Stay tuned:

Happy Bloggiversary!!! I am so happy to have met you through blogging! I would have never imagined finding friends on the internet that I have never met. I enjoy your blog so much. I laugh, cry, smile and learn. Blogs remind me of the Never Ending Story. Our blogs are books that never end and always have a story to tell. I know for me and I am sure other moms our blogs are a little time capsule of ourselves. I look back even at product reviews and smile and get heart warmed by my little guy in the pictures. I can see him change so much in the first year just simply by looking trough my blog. I look forward to the next year of your blogging. I also do really enjoy your husbands posts. It gives your blog a unique view. Keep up the awesome job you two do and congrats on this milestone! P.S. Sorry if this is kinda a long comment lol
