Tactile Learning with Educational Insights

Ever notice how kids have to TOUCH everything? It’s because they are exploring the world through their fingertips. Building a “schema” in their brains that helps them identify and sort textures and shapes. Watching the learning happen right in front of my eyes these past few months has been delightful! My son has been rapidly learning his colors, so the two tactile active play sets we received from Educational Insights was perfect timing!

Teachable Touchables – Texture play is a favorite activity for me with my son. I love watching him try to figure out why the squares feel different. We’ve discussed “scratchy, slippery, silky or soft” using these fun pillows and patches. He likes to throw, stack, arrange, sort these sensory squares! And then stuff them in the sack and carry them around, or load up his dump truck with them!

Ten different pairs of 3″ textured squares help little ones explore and build tactile discrimination. Side benefit? My son can now count to two, because I always have him play a matching stack up at the end to put the squares away. He will hold up both squares and say, “One! Two!” before putting them in the bag! He has also become better at his color identification as well! We brought these and the Shapes Bean Bags along on our road trips this summer, and they were great quiet toys for the car ride! Grades PreK+. ARV $24.99.

Shapes Bean Bags – Another fun game I’ve been enjoying with my son is using the Shapes Bean Bags to teach him shapes and colors. The squishy bags are fun to throw, appealing to a child’s kinesthetic side. And my child loves throwing things, so I am glad these are soft and quiet throwing toys!

Each of the 8 bags are a different shape and color. Sometimes I have him throw then retrieve based on color and sometimes on shape (he does better with the colors right now!). An Activity Guide is included with ideas for more fun activities with these bags that I know we’ll enjoy as he gets older! Grades PreK+. ARV $19.99

These two sets are great beginning learning tools for colors, shapes, textures… and your kid won’t even know they are learning! That is the beauty of it – they are learning from very simple play! It’s a great concept that I’ve been reading and studying about and hope to share more on that topic soon!
