Sorting is an important learning skill for children, because it builds their understanding of numerical concepts, helps them organize their world, and differentiate between object properties. So much learning is happening in just a simple sorting game.
In keeping with the fall season, this past week my son got to sort mixed nuts. I always buy bags of nuts around this time of year, because it’s fun to have them around to crack and eat when you’re bored. But they are also really fun to sort. And he’s learning the vocabulary of each kind of nut too. Now he can tell me which is the “A-mond” and which is the “Wah-nut!”
THIS week, I decided to try the activity a few times before blogging about it, and I have to say, sorting nuts is a quick and easy activity to do at any time of day – the more we do it, the more interested he’s gotten! I just pull out a muffin tin and the bowl of nuts and he can be busy for a few minutes!
What other sorting games do you suggest? (Handmade or bought)

This is great! I would never have thought of the mixed nuts for sorting. One thing my mom did was to cut out a bunch of different shapes on different colored cardboard, then she would have us sort by shape or by color depending on age and 'skill' level. might not be perfect for the little-one yet but as he keep growing... <3

I have to say, I've never actually heard of anyone purposely buying those bags of mixed nuts. :) But this is a perfect activity for them, and I know my son would enjoy trying all the different nuts. Great idea!
