I am sooo excited – hubby and I got new bikes!!! We’ve been tooling around town on them, and hoping to take them camping too! We debated – considering exercise bikes and treadmills, because initially we thought we’d like an exercise machine to use in all weather.
Since we prefer the outside, we went with actual bikes. Our long range plans are to include our son in our exercise routines. And spend a lot of time outdoors. Every kid needs to go through that rite of passage: learning to ride a bicycle. At least, I think so. He’s not ready for that yet. But, we thought, let’s start NOW being outdoor bicyclists, so he’ll grow up loving to ride bikes, being an outdoor baby!
We both got hybrid road/mountain bikes, which means, we’ll stick to the roads, but if there’s a dirt path with rough patches, our bikes will handle it. There will be no jumping off rock cliffs, or kamikazes through switchbacks, as in my (much) younger years!
True, we won’t be able to use our bikes in bad weather, but when it is nice out, we’ll have the run of our town. We’ll bring them along camping, or take them to the local Rails-to-Trails sections in our state. One goal we have is to follow the Rails-to-Trails path from Hartford down to New Haven for a slice of Pepe’s world-famous pizza. Then work it off by riding home! It’ll be a long trip, but something to work towards.
I’m looking forward to our summer as mom and dad: bicyclists extraordinaire! I’m sure I’ll be writing about our adventures later!
Side note: Have you seen the recumbent exercise bike? I’ve tried these at the gym. They are much more comfortable than regular exercise bikes, plus you can read a book while exercising – perfect!
Do you ride? Do you prefer an exercise bike or a real one?
