We got new bikes!

I am sooo excited – hubby and I got new bikes!!! We’ve been tooling around town on them, and hoping to take them camping too! We debated – considering exercise bikes and treadmills, because initially we thought we’d like an exercise machine to use in all weather.

Since we prefer the outside, we went with actual bikes. Our long range plans are to include our son in our exercise routines. And spend a lot of time outdoors. Every kid needs to go through that rite of passage: learning to ride a bicycle. At least, I think so. He’s not ready for that yet. But, we thought, let’s start NOW being outdoor bicyclists, so he’ll grow up loving to ride bikes, being an outdoor baby!

We both got hybrid road/mountain bikes, which means, we’ll stick to the roads, but if there’s a dirt path with rough patches, our bikes will handle it. There will be no jumping off rock cliffs, or kamikazes through switchbacks, as in my (much) younger years!

True, we won’t be able to use our bikes in bad weather, but when it is nice out, we’ll have the run of our town. We’ll bring them along camping, or take them to the local Rails-to-Trails sections in our state. One goal we have is to follow the Rails-to-Trails path from Hartford down to New Haven for a slice of Pepe’s world-famous pizza. Then work it off by riding home! It’ll be a long trip, but something to work towards.

I’m looking forward to our summer as mom and dad: bicyclists extraordinaire! I’m sure I’ll be writing about our adventures later!

Side note: Have you seen the recumbent exercise bike? I’ve tried these at the gym. They are much more comfortable than regular exercise bikes, plus you can read a book while exercising – perfect!

Do you ride? Do you prefer an exercise bike or a real one?

New bikes are great. We had bikes a few years back but my husband ended up having a surgery that makes it so bike riding is no longer something he can do. I purchased a exercise bike for the house so I can still ride for a workout. I put on headphones and ride my heart out while my son naps. Sometimes I turn on the Discovery channel and learn while I bike!

I'd loooooove a hybrid!! Hubby just bought a bike and had some work done to it and they broke pieces on his bike because of they didn't take their time on it. He's been waiting weeks to have it fixed. We've been keeping an eye out for a beach cruiser for me and one of those tag along things for dd to ride behind hubby.

I have an ironman bike at home and it' sooooo comfy! I love riding it and it's another good one for reading and pedaling... although it's difficult to hold a toddler!!

We have hybrid bikes, too. Hubby has a couple others as he used to be into bike racing and rode EVERYWHERE - sometimes he still rides to work. We pull the trailer and now can take the kids along. It is quite a good work out to pull two kids - about 65lbs with cargo behind the bike. I feel like I have to pedal constantly - even when going downhill. But we do enjoy it.

I have never been a fan of stationary bikes. I do use an elliptical machine at home but I feel like if I am pedaling I should be going somewhere.

I hope you have a wonderful time with your new bikes.
