What Do I Stuff My Wool With?

So, in case you couldn’t tell, when I decided to do this event, I was a total wool newbie. I had won a wool cover from EcoMom in their 7 Days of Giving (more on that later), but was afraid to use it! Haha! So it sat on the dresser top for several weeks. That is part of what sparked me to start this event – I thought, if I am so hesitant to use wool, simply because of my inexperience, I bet other moms are too!

Now really, you can use just about anything under your wool, the same as with a PUL cover, but remember, because it doesn’t have the PUL lining, your wool cover is only as good as the diaper underneath. Make sure you have a good fit! Here are your options:

Inserts – the flat insert is really only going to work with a wool wrap cover, otherwise it won’t stay in place with a soaker (unless you have some miracle way of keeping it still or a VERY snug soaker). I found double stuffing worked best to get maximum absorbency. When I single stuffed, I made sure to change my baby in about 60-90 minutes, just to prevent the wool from getting over saturated.

Prefolds – with pins or snappies, you’ll find a nicely fastened prefold does a wonderful job under a wool cover. I love the “jelly roll” style fold that Erin from Sloomb | Sustainable Babyish taught me – it creates the perfect channel to trap the moisture, and a folded doubler fits nicely in the front for a booster.
Fitteds – my personal favorites. I bought two fitteds to help me test all the wool covers for this event (with a gift card!), and I’m glad I did. Prior to this event, I mostly had inserts, 3 fitteds and 2 prefolds. Almost all the wool covers I reviewed were the soaker (pull on/off) style, which sometimes pulled my prefolds off too! Not great if you have a messy diaper! So, my preference for wool is a nice fitted diaper – and there are so many cute prints to choose from! For nighttime diapering, fitteds are great because you can easily double stuff them with an insert and everything stays put!
