We’ll be taking our child out into the wild soon… babe in the woods. I picture him being curious about pine needles, owls in the night, lake water, boats, and fireflies.

I never went camping as a child, so as an adult it has taken time to get used to sleeping with scary sounds. And no lights.

We usually put a nightlight on for our son when he goes to bed. For our camping trip, we’re bringing the Terra Kids Camping Light, from HABA. I love how rugged this kids’ lantern is: protected by a canvas case with bright stitching. Delightful explorer features like a compass, carabiner, and alarm whistle! And safe for a little kid to see his way in the dark woods (okay, who am I kidding? THIS mama is taking the lantern to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I bet!).

And… most importantly for the wild – no batteries! It’s a generator light! Turn the crank for two minutes and get an hour of light from the 5 LEDs! Perfect for a timed nightlight in the tent!

The Terra Kids Camping Light comes with instructions, so you can explain to children what a generator light does – I am going to love sharing this with my niece and nephew too, who are old enough to understand the in-depth workings of this lamp.

My little boy loved trucking his new camping light around the yard, learning to turn it on.  This is the perfect first addition to his own camping gear! I think having special gear for a trip or outing builds the excitement for children!

You can find Terra Kids Camping Light at Maukilo (remember the awesome felt grill set I shared with you last month?).

Last year was the first time we brought our twin girls camping. They were 3 at the time, a few things we brought were their baby dolls, something similar from home. They felt safe sleeping in the tents with no worries. Also their own little flash lights so if they got scared they had their light just in case.

  • Deborah Rosen July 24, 2011, 9:58 am

My grandson’s too little to take camping just yet, but when we used to take my son, we always had to take his Sylvester (which was bigger than he was), his own small camp chair, his own small tent (which we used for storage since he always wanted to sleep in our tent lol), his baseball gear and his own small fishing rod.

  • Nancy July 24, 2011, 9:40 am

Sunscreen is a must -have outdoors!

  • Jill L July 24, 2011, 7:38 am

We bring nets and buckets so that they can catch things in the stream. My kids love to camp and while my older son has his own camping light, the litlte ones don’t. They would think this was pretty cool.

  • Chris July 23, 2011, 10:44 pm

We love camping! My kids have small lanterns, but they take batteries and a lantern without batteries would be a godsend! It would be perfect for those smore making evenings around the fire.

  • taylor marves July 23, 2011, 10:12 pm

i bring a lot of fluids with me specially when i know that its going to be hot, things that will make him feel at home like his pillow pet or just a few extra fun toys to play with in the dirt

  • Allison Lesley July 23, 2011, 9:32 pm

When we go camping I always bring cane pole fishing poles lol! I love them because when I was a little girl and me and my parents went fishing, I always had a little cane pole and caught brim. It was some of the best times from when I was a kid♥!!

  • Lisa G. July 23, 2011, 8:47 pm

My children love taking boards games and our solar radio. There favorite part is hanging out around the fire pit in the evening playing games and singing songs together. This year will be my youngest daughter’s first camping trip and I’m not sure yet what all I will bring for her but I think she would really enjoy having her own light.

  • Stephanie Klemm July 23, 2011, 8:30 pm

I usually bring a bunch of stuff I don’t need :) I’d say sumscreen and something to keep bugs away are essential.

  • Tammy Darling July 23, 2011, 5:45 pm

My kids think the most important thing to pack is the fixings for smores!

  • Lorena Keech July 23, 2011, 2:39 pm

I visited the website and was excited to see a variety of costs and products for so many age groups.

  • Mrs. Smitty July 23, 2011, 11:31 am

When we camp, we bring everything to make life easy and relaxing for the week. That includes kid-version items of our equipment so our toddler feels involved. The kid’s light would be perfect as her mini-lantern (we’ve got a propane-fueled glass lantern that she’s not allowed to touch)

  • Meghan July 23, 2011, 12:09 am

I really love their products and this is a great functional one. I always struggle when camping about toys but this is something that could be fun AND useful :)

  • Tiffany U July 22, 2011, 11:13 pm

wow I would love to have this to show my kids life doesnt always revolve around electronics and the power goes out around here when it storms badly so it would also do in a pinch for lighting indoors too!

  • Sabrina Radke July 22, 2011, 10:56 pm

I have never been able to take my kids camping but if I could I would definitely take flash lights and cots to sleep on not just sleeping bags. I would love to have a huge tent and some cool little chairs to sit by a camp fire and tell stories.

  • Jill Myrick July 22, 2011, 8:45 pm

We all sleep in the large two room tent but my children also love having their own smaller tent set up to play in.
It has their games, toys lights etc that they play with during our down time until they are ready to go to sleep.

  • jennifer July 22, 2011, 3:45 pm

Still trying to get our 3 year old acclimated to camping trips. We are planning to bring some brand new, outdoor related toys on the next trip.

  • Knocked Up and Nursing July 22, 2011, 11:02 am

We bring lots of yummy food and hearts full of excitement for the adventure that awaits. My kids LOVE camping, this would be fun for them!

  • Krista July 21, 2011, 2:04 am

That is a super cute light! It would work great as a night light in the tent! Not that we’ve gone in awhile… lame, we need to go!

  • Alicia C. July 20, 2011, 6:36 pm

I absolutely love Maukilo’s products! I don’t think there is a toy on their site that I don’t want for my kids.
And, when we go out for nighttime walks (a lot more often since it’s been so hot during the day!), I bring my 2.5 y.o. a really cool flashlight. It doesn’t take batteries – you just rev it up by squeezing the handle a few times. He loves it and I don’t have to worry about using up batteries!

  • Michelle July 20, 2011, 6:23 am

We’ve been thinking of camping with our daughters but are worried about going too far, however we live right near a campsite- a walk from home and this would be perfect to light our way.

  • Miranda Ward July 20, 2011, 2:58 am

when i take my kids camping I make sure to bring extra clothes there favorite snacks and food, Lots of activites camping or outdoor related

  • betsy July 19, 2011, 11:53 pm

We have a an awesome sleeping pad for them that every time they go on a camping trip they can write on it how old they where, where they where at , and how tall they where. they also have sleeping bags that fit them. We love wool socks so if there feeet get dry they will dry quickly.

  • Michelle J. July 19, 2011, 11:43 pm

I make sure all the kids have their own light–usually a flashlight, sometimes a headlamp, and they can have glow sticks as well for extra light (they make good night lights when it’s time to sleep, too.).

  • Becca July 19, 2011, 9:08 pm

This lantern is awesome! I love that it’s safe for the little ones to tote around. I agree that it makes camping trips more special for kids when they have their own equipment. Although we use them occasionally for things besides camping, my kids love that they have their own camp chairs that are their size.

  • Wehaf July 19, 2011, 8:20 pm

I think having battery-free toys like this is great for kids, especially when camping. I do think a flashlight is more fun, though.

  • Kris I. July 19, 2011, 7:22 pm

I always bring too much stuff when we go camping, but I usually bring cards, board games for my children to play.

  • lace July 19, 2011, 7:21 pm

We make sure to bring their favorite doll/bear for sleeping. It comforts them when in a strange setting.

  • Monica Pelletier July 19, 2011, 1:28 pm

What do we bring when we spend ANY time outside? Big spray! And more bug spray! By husband and son are magnets for mosquitos (which is nice for me–the bugs are busy eating them while I keep all my blood!) Thankfully, we’ve found a few natural sprays that don’t smell terrible and keep the bugs at bay. If we won this light, I could keep an eye on all those noctural pests while we play at night.

  • Pauline July 19, 2011, 11:56 am

My children are terrified of the outdoors until recently when we took them to Caz, NY to visit my husband’s family. They recently asked if they can go camping and I think that this would be a great camping gear starter item – (emscout9 at Hotmail dot com)

  • Cassie July 19, 2011, 9:53 am

We always bring the kids’ bikes/trikes.

  • Linda July 19, 2011, 9:44 am

We take frisbee and yard toys to play at camp.

  • Susan C July 18, 2011, 9:46 pm

  • Jen July 18, 2011, 2:32 pm

my son loves back yard camping, all you need is a good tent and you can turn any nice night into a fun camping adventure!

  • Sara T July 18, 2011, 1:29 pm

I love the children’s flatware set I saw on their website. Our baby is almost one, but we haven’t made out camping yet. This would be a great addition when we do. I’m sure he would have fun trying to crank it up!

  • HeatherM July 18, 2011, 10:17 am

when we camp, we make sure to bring the backpack so we can take our daughter on hikes! she would love a lantern this year!

  • Shannon July 18, 2011, 1:34 am

We haven’t camped yet but we will this later this summer. My baby is 12 months, so we’ll be bringing her pack n’ play, lots of change of clothes and lots of toys! This flashlight is so cute though and will be a lot of fun for her!

  • Zene July 17, 2011, 8:55 pm

My guy has his own headlamp that he uses outside at night or when the power goes out ;) but he is bad about pointing the light in our eyes. Spottedjagiwar at yahoo dot com

  • AB Smith July 17, 2011, 4:42 pm

we are headed to a family camping event at our local park in august – this would be great for the kids to use!

  • Terri S. July 17, 2011, 9:44 am

We’ve been camping since our 2 kids were little and now we enjoy it with them as grown-ups along with our 2 granddaughters. We bring our portable grill, lots of food & water, toys, sunscreen, first-aid kit (just in case), sleeping bags, and flashlights. HABA has wonderful toys for kids and this Terra Kids Camping Light looks great. I love that no batteries are needed and you crank it to get an hour of light. :)

  • Stephanie July 16, 2011, 9:28 pm

Hey! That’s pretty cool! I love how durable it is.

When we camp/hike, we bring lots of water, plenty of snacks, and UV sun-protectant clothing.

  • Amber J July 16, 2011, 8:43 pm

When we play outside, we love to play with different types of balls. My kids love throwing them to each other and chasing them around the yard. I’d love to try this kind: http://www.maukilo.com/7-horses-ball.html
Looks kind of like an old school kick ball!

  • jr911 July 15, 2011, 3:20 pm

We like to bring fishing poles, card games, and light up toys for night play

  • annette anderson July 15, 2011, 7:53 am

Oh! We love camping! It is something our whole family does together several times a year. We usually go to the nearby State Park or to a lake about 45 min. from here. All 8 of my grandchildren usually go and they love it. It is a place they can all run and play. We always bring the little mini hand held flashlites for them. But, the bad thing with that is the batteries always die within a few hours because they leave them on. I love that this light has NO BATTERIES! Great giveaway!
    Thanks, mimilovesall8@yahoo.com

  • Wendy Lopez July 15, 2011, 2:15 am

when we go camping I take his bike and his fishing pole because loves fishing even if has never been lucky to catch one yet.

  • Kimberly July 14, 2011, 11:16 pm

When we go camping we always bring extra blankets and lots of plastic bags for dirty clothes

  • Jessi G July 14, 2011, 9:47 pm

I have gone camping with my kids once. We had a terrible trip!LOL. Since it was our first time, we took things we thought were necessary and that was that. Turns out, we know nothing about camping. We got bit up by mosquitoes(we sprayed tons of repellent, just must not have been a good brand). We were scared to death when the sun went down!(that’s one reason I’d love to win this) and slept so uncomfortable, laying on the tent floor with no extra blanket. We still want to camp again, but will make sure to be more prepared :)

  • Jessica A July 14, 2011, 11:28 am

Having lived in SD with the boys for so long, we never went camping! :( BUT we are planning a big family camping trip in August with cousins so this would be perfect for us!! I think that boys are going to love it! As you said, I am picturing the boys to go wild with exploration… I can’t wait! :)

  • stephanie macdonald July 14, 2011, 10:38 am

My son is all about the night light and now that he is getting older we’d like to take him. I am sure the woods will be no substitution for his need of his nightlight and this would be PERFECT!

  • Kerry July 14, 2011, 9:57 am

I haven’t taken my kids camping yet, but when we go outdoors we make sure to take bug spray, sun screen, and a ball to kick around. The lantern looks really fun, my son would love going outside at night with it.

    alsatia23 at hotmail dot com

  • JLJMommy July 14, 2011, 9:01 am

My two older boys (7&5) have their own kids flashlights, but the baby (14 month old) doesn’t have his own. He is always trying to steal the big boys light. This would be a great addition for him and help keep the peace.

  • becky July 13, 2011, 7:32 pm

my son has a bear that glows for 30 minutes at a time with different colors. he LOVED it when we were camping. if he woke up in the middle of the night and was scared he could turn it on under him sleeping bag and it made him feel safe but wasnt too bright that it kept him awake or woke anyone else up. my daughter doesnt have one so this would be PERFECT for her when we go for night time fire fly walks and camping!

  • Amanda C July 13, 2011, 3:20 pm

We love to camp and this light would be great for the kids. I have to say I have seen some camping lights reviewed on blogs recently and this one is by far the cutest. I like how sturdy it looks. A must for anything we take camping.

  • Octavia Jones July 13, 2011, 1:06 pm

I’ve always wanted a hand crank flashlight. We have the typical battery hog lights that we take on trips with us and around the house for power outages. This year I’ve switched from bug spray to mixing citronella oil and water in a spray bottle. Works well and a bit greener. A hand crank light would be another awesome way to green up outdoor trips! Thanks for the chance to win :)

  • susan varney July 13, 2011, 12:19 pm

usually fishing poles and swimming gear and a few games

  • Kim July 13, 2011, 10:24 am

I’ve never taken our son camping – but we totally plan to soon!! I just hope the DIRT doesn’t bother him. He’s a clean-freak kid.

  • Amanda Alvarado July 13, 2011, 8:05 am

So we don’t do camping but we do do the beach! We usually bring lots of sand toys and a tent or canopy for dd. This light will come in handy during hurricane season (oh wait it is hurricane season! LOL) if we happen to get hit again! Already had one close TD and I’m hoping we don’t have any while we are gone on vacation because I don’t know that my ds would know what to do (he will be house sitting for us)! DD doesn’t like the dark so she will have her own light to carry around while the electricity is out!

Off topic but I LOVE this one entry method! So much faster…even better than rafflecopter!

  • Chelly July 13, 2011, 7:48 am

Oh my little one would love that! Her very own lantern! Those camping flame lanterns attract more than just bugs…. they attract little fingers too!!

We like to camp in the back of our truck with a mattress! Our backs just don’t fare well on hard ground. I love love love camping but hubby is not that into it. Last time dd and I went we joined two other moms and their babes in a huge tent. It was very cold, the girls lagged so we got there at dusk, dd got her first real owie, I started my AF after not having it for over 2 years (great timing right?! when I’m in the woods) But we had a blast roasting marshmallows and seeing racoons families, singing and telling stories. We only had a couple flashlights and a lantern would have been most helpful. Next time, then men come with!

Their Terra line has some great stuff that camping boys would love… the sun dial is so cool! I’ve never seen one that you can take out with you, but even going by the sun I’d still be late ;)

  • Sheila K. July 13, 2011, 7:25 am

This lantern sure would come in handy during our South Florida hurricane season—during our last bad hurricane we were without electricity for two weeks and went through an enormous number of flashlight batteries!

  • Mechele Johnson July 13, 2011, 12:58 am

We go on a two week canoe trip every summer. It is called Tribal Canoe Journey. about 100 different Coastal Indian tribes travel from different locations to converge at one final destination, which changes every year. This year we end at Swinomish. I usually spend all year slowly but surely preparing for this trip. I coupon to stock up on sunblock, toiletries (our Canoe “family” has about 35 people in it), flash lights, batteries, etc. We are fortuneate enough to have a pop up tent trailer, however, with five kids, the older ones don’t fit comfortably. They sleep right next to us in regular tents. This would be absolutely awesome for my 11 year old who will be graduating to a regular tent this year!

  • T Rex Mom July 12, 2011, 10:06 pm

I love that it has no batteries. I get so tired of replacing batteries for such things because it was left on in a fort somewhere. Sounds handy to have along on that big upcoming trip.

  • Julie Witt July 12, 2011, 6:11 pm

I’ve never taken my 4 y/o camping but we play outside all the time, and the Road and Rail Zip Bin looks like SO much fun! My son does play camp in the house with blankets and sheets and he always takes a flashlight in with him, so the little lantern would be so perfect for him!

  • Terri S Crum July 12, 2011, 5:16 pm

Sorry to say my kids are all grown up now….but my grandkids are the next best thing!!! I always bring glo-sticks for them to use at night when we are out! They have a blast!

  • Brittney Minor July 12, 2011, 4:52 pm

I love your camping themed giveaways! It makes me want to go on vacation! We bring lots of books for our kids when we travel. We haven’t done much camping yet with our kids…maybe we will start in the fall! My husband and I don’t like getting toys or anything that uses batteries, so this is perfect! I love finding new things that my kids and I will both love!

  • Joy Newlan July 12, 2011, 3:09 pm

we put headlamps on our kids…they can see where they are going…and we can see where they went :)

  • Tiffany July 12, 2011, 2:21 pm

I’ve never taken Darah camping, but I would love to have this for sitting on the porch after it gets dark (especially a bit later in the summer and the early part of fall). Isn’t that when the lightning bugs are out? I think so! Maybe the lamp would help attract them!

  • Lisa Brooks (Webb) July 12, 2011, 9:41 am

This is great, it would allow her to stay outside even longer. Lightening bugs would have to be on alert for sure. LOL

  • Natalie Sharp July 12, 2011, 8:47 am

This would be an awesome win. Our little guy is too young yet for camping but next year I’m sure we will get out. This would be an awesome option for him (I’m sure I would use it too).

  • ashley wheeler July 12, 2011, 8:46 am

Whenever we go camping we have to take my daughters sleeping bag, her kid 4-wheeler, and she loves flashlights but we don’t have any that are for kids. This one would be great
