Kicking off The Outdoor Life event! I love being outside. But you have to manage unfavorable elements – bugs, sunburn, damp, and dirt. Here are Outdoor Essential items to help you deal!

Bengay® Pain Relief + Massage

I am the world’s worst masseuse. It runs in the family – we have skinny pinchy fingers. Working in the garden, running, hiking… all lead to sore, stiff muscles (even though we are NOT “old!”).

We tried BENGAY® Pain Relief + Massage topical analgesic balm for relief. My husband said it was WAY better than when I try to work out a stiff muscle for him. The tube allows you to apply the ointment (which has a menthol scent at first, but quickly vanishes). Then I twisted the cap closed and used the specially designed massaging applicator (it has five little nubs!) to rub in the ointment. For once, hubby wasn’t wincing from my nails pinching him, and my hands didn’t get tired! I didn’t even get my hands messy! It’s perfect for after a hike, or if you wake up with a stiff neck from camping! (ARV $7.79. 3 oz tube).

Another factor in being outdoors is proper skin care. Know where people forget to protect? LIPS! If you’re outdoors more than 20 minutes, put some SPF protection on your delicate lip skin – glosses and balms do NOT cut it!

EcoLips makes a variety of products, many with SFP 30 protection. They use organic products whenever they can (Vitamin E has no organic version), and clearly label how much of their product is, in fact, organic. EcoLips Face Stick is 82% organic (it contains 3% oxybenzone), and glides on smooth. I did find it remained a bit oily after application. EcoLips SPF products block UV rays and moisturizes skin with natural oils and extracts, protecting from sun, wind, dry heat and cold. (ARV $7.49)

EcoLips Sport goes on smooth with a mild vanilla scent. (ARV $2.49). Try Honest Kids organic lip balm for little ones – with yummy Berry Berry flavor! My son LOVES his lip balm! (Does not have SPF!). (ARV $2.49).

We tried a variety of EcoLips balms and moisturizers without SPF 30 –great flavors and natural ingredient – Organic EcoLips Gold has the USDA Organic certification. Find out more about EcoLips by following them on Facebook and Twitter

KIWI Products

My first camping experience EVER was in the cold wet woods of Franconia, New Hampshire. And, both times I’ve hiked Mt. Washington, it has been rainy. Honestly, not sure why I ever went camping or hiking again. But I wanted to give nice weather a chance!

To stay dry, try KIWI Camp Dry Performance Fabric Protector on synthetic, nylon, and Gore-Tex fabrics. We spray our hiking boots yearly to maintain a waterproof barrier. Hats, coats, fleeces and pants would also benefit. It’s summer, so all those items are packed away, but you can bet we’ll give them a KIWI treatment in the fall! Not only does KIWI protect your fabrics from the wet, but also from dirt and stains. Definitely going to be some dirt if you’re an outdoor enthusiast! (ARV $7)

KIWI Camp Dry Heavy Duty Water Repellent has silicone content that bonds to materials, forming a tough water barrier. We’re trying this out on our tent’s rain fly to improve performance. Easy to spray on – you just have to let it set for about 24 hours. You could use this on tents, bags, boots, tarps, and other outdoor gear. (ARV $10)

Even if you’re only outdoors in your backyard, you can use these products on lounge chairs, hammocks, flags, pool covers. Kiwi recommends household uses like silk ties, tablecloths, purses, etc. I’ve got a lot of work to do this summer, protecting all my high-use fabrics around the house!

Who doesn’t love a nice little campfire, roasting marshmallows, or even a fire pit on the patio on a warm summer evening. We used Enviro-Log firelogs at the beach last weekend. A great option for the natural, organic outdoor family! Made from 100% recycled materials – food-grade waxed cardboard boxes. These boxes would end up in a landfill, but Enviro-Log gives them a second use as a fuel! They burn for about 3 hours, with much less smoke than firewood. Great for when you camp out of state and aren’t allowed to bring your own firewood! Check them out on Facebook! (ARV $21 – 6 pack of 3 lb logs).

Need more fire? Check out Zippo’s Outdoor Utility Lighter. A high-tech lighter with adjustable flame for precision use – grills, lanterns, tiki torches – who doesn’t love a good tiki torch on a summer night? The advanced ignition system lights easily (unlike lighters where you have to fight with the button to get a spark!). There’s a child-resistant safety button – you have to press two buttons to light. It’s refillable, so I won’t keep buying those plastic stove/grill lighters anymore. And it’s wind-resistant, perfect for outdoor fires! (ARV $19.95).

Thompson’s Water Seal

Finally, outdoor gear gets dirty. No way around it. Even if you don’t camp, your decking, patio furniture, and children’s toys develop that film from pollen and dust. I hate seeing my household dingy and dirty.

To combat outdoor grim, I used Thompson’s Water Seal Oxy Foaming Action Cleaner to scrub my son’s water table – being mostly white,  it developed that dirty look quickly. You can remove dirt and even mildew from wood, brick, concrete, and other outdoor materials with just a spray, scrub, and rinse! It’s biodegradable, non-bleach, and chlorine free! (ARV $12 – 32 oz. bottle).

That Outdoor Ulitity Light could really come in handy! It’s hard to light a wet match in the great and soggy outdoors!

  • Mrs. Smitty July 23, 2011, 11:28 am

The Thompson’s Water Seal Oxy Foaming Action Cleaner would be amazing! All my kid’s toys the concrete steps/porch to out house, the siding, the carport, the lawnmower… endless possibilities! I also love the envirolog. We camp when we visit my family in MN, it’s a pain to get firewood when you can’t bring it from out of state and you arrive at 8-9 pm and have the tent and bedding to worry about. This would be perfect!

  • Meghan July 23, 2011, 12:11 am

This is the perfect giveaway for this time of year. While I haven’t used all of the products mentioned, I’m most interested in the KIWI Camp Dry Performance Fabric Protector because I love hiking in all weather and my clothes certainly suffer for it

  • Tiffany U July 22, 2011, 11:06 pm

I have been looking for something like the Thompsons to clean our new (new to us at least) swing set because even after several years shes got a whole lot of life left in her she just looks a bit gray.

  • hripsime andonian July 22, 2011, 10:54 pm

    Enviro Logs are my faves…

  • Gianna July 22, 2011, 10:53 pm

    I’ve never tried any before.
My husband has recently tried the new bengay before a test and it really helped him with pain he had from bruised ribs a week before.

  • angieboss July 22, 2011, 7:21 pm

Love, love love the o utdoor utility lighter – maybe my husband will stop stealing my little kitchen one all the time.

  • Ericka July 22, 2011, 5:28 pm

  • Jill L July 22, 2011, 12:59 pm

Haven’t used any of these products, but I would love to add them all. We have taken up camping this year and we have just the basics. Anything to make the camp easier would be great.

  • Happi Shopr July 22, 2011, 10:31 am

  • Leanne Hill July 21, 2011, 11:36 pm

Ive tried the Bengay pain relief and massage and its AMAZING, I sit at a desk all day and my back cramps up and this helps, the massaging part is an added bonus!!

  • Jammie July 21, 2011, 7:10 pm

I think if one spends a lot of time outdoors, a screen in tent would be awesome to have. We have one and it helps to keep those pesky bugs away .

  • Sarah July 21, 2011, 6:39 pm

I haven’t tried any of these products but the Thompson’s Water Seal Oxy Foaming Action Cleaner is something I would love to try.

  • Lucy Schwartz July 21, 2011, 3:37 pm

My love of the outdoors is inversely proportional to the bug to human ratio. and that becomes lopsided because in any bug survey I am picked by 9 out of ten bugs. So being outdoors occurs when I am sun screen drenched and bug repellant dipped.

  • tomato July 21, 2011, 2:03 pm

I have the outdoor utility lighter and love it!

  • Mike Patillo July 21, 2011, 2:02 pm

I use many of these products in my role as Land Surveyor. The Bengay is a must for my sore muscles (daily use), I use the KIWI Camp Dry Performance Fabric Protector on my tote bags / laptop bags.

All of the products would be very useful to me, for certain.

We have unreal swarms of mosquitos here so we could really use that heavy duty repellant

  • Diane Baum July 21, 2011, 11:10 am

Unfortunately, I’ve never tried these product, but I have tried camping and I surrivived!

  • Hannah Avery July 21, 2011, 10:15 am

We have a 10 person tent, and LOVE it! Its great when you have a crawling baby, because he can crawl around in it and have plenty of room! For campfire cooking, we love our cast iron pot and skillets too! Also, a syphen works great for getting water out of 5 gallon jugs for washing dishes, etc. Those cardboard logs sound really cool. They would be great to use the next morning, if you got rained out! That has happened to us!

  • deana c July 21, 2011, 9:49 am

  • Talijolgus July 21, 2011, 9:23 am

I haven’t tried any of these products, but I would recommend FlameDisks. They’re made by uGo and they’re solid fuel for cooking on. We used them at a camping cookout and they were fantastic!

  • Joy July 21, 2011, 9:11 am

I wonder if I could use that spray on the inside of my cloth diapers that are beginning to leak? Thanks for the info, we got a little wet in the downpour that surprised us on our last camping trip.

  • Amber Schambach July 20, 2011, 1:50 pm

I think the Zippo would be so handy. Only ’cause sometimes it’s a bit too windy to use matches, and going a couple days eating trail mix gets pretty boring. I’ve gone on camping/canoe trips that’ve lasted over 5 weeks! One thing I kno forsure is that a lighter would probably make things a little bit easier, especially a Zippo.

  • Missy July 20, 2011, 1:44 pm

We have an air pump that is also a flashlight. Very handy.

  • phxbne July 20, 2011, 12:50 pm

would love to try the Thompson’s Water Seal Oxy Foaming Action Cleaner – in the desert keeping outdoor things clean is a losing battle…..

  • Becca July 19, 2011, 9:05 pm

We have used the enviro-log to get a campfire started. Although when we’re with a group of friends it seems that the men all want to prove their manliness by starting a fire “from scratch”. I’ve got three kids 4 and under, so one camping essential for us is a container of baby wipes.

  • Kris I. July 19, 2011, 6:53 pm

I would love to try the enviro logs; I’ve never heard of them before; we go camping a lot and we also have bon fires for the kids the back yard during the summer months. I think they would be perfect. I like the fact that they create less smoke.

  • Pauline July 19, 2011, 11:52 am

I have been using Bengay Pain Relief + Massage for over a year and I love it. It makes applying ointment like these easier than ever. – (emscout9 at Hotmail dot com)

  • Kristie July 19, 2011, 5:29 am

The only thing I have tried is Ben Gay but i love the Outdoor Bic lighter. This would be something we could really use. i also like the eco lip balm.

  • Gayle C July 19, 2011, 1:12 am

I have used Thompson’s Water Seal products but I did not even know about the Oxy Cleaning Foam. I will have to try to find that locally.

  • Joy Newlan July 18, 2011, 11:52 pm

the Enviro-Log looks awesome! we always forget firewood… maybe we should remember this year!

  • Sara T July 18, 2011, 1:32 pm

I haven’t tried any of these products. It would be great to have something to keep our water-proof boots their best. The ecolog is a great idea for campfires.

  • Anna-Leigh July 18, 2011, 12:53 pm

We just might have to plan a camping trip with goodies like these. It’s been so long since we’ve been, we’re about do for some outdoor fun!

  • HeatherM July 18, 2011, 10:25 am

i have not tried any of these products but i think my husband would especially love the water repellent!

  • Tamara B. July 18, 2011, 10:11 am

I bought hubby one of the Zippo’s Outdoor Utility Lighters and he uses it for everything. It’s his new toy (lol) I would love to try the Thompson’s Water Seal Oxy Foaming Action Cleaner to up the outside patio and love that it is biodegradable!

  • Shannon July 18, 2011, 1:22 am

I haven’t used any of the products, but I’m pretty interested in the zippo lighter. We use matches to light the Coleman lanterns and the lighter would be so much easier. I would also be interesting in trying the waterproof spray. Lord knows we need it in Seattle!

  • Zene July 17, 2011, 8:43 pm

We’ve used the enviro logs before and we love them! the hubs loves not having to take wood camping. Less mess. Spottedjagiwar at yahoo dot com

  • Terri P July 17, 2011, 6:47 pm

And an amazing giveaway it is, too. We have friends with an outdoor patio / firepit and an indoor fireplace — so we’ve used the Outdoor Utility Lighter and firelogs many times. They are a great time-saver.

As far as the Ben-Gay? Love it! I have a bad back and this is my go-to creme for pain relief!

  • Kathleen Conner July 17, 2011, 5:15 pm

I use the EcoLips Face Stick–it’s my favorite brand. It’s not as hard as others, so doesn’t hurt if your lips are at all chapped.

  • Jhitomi July 17, 2011, 2:05 pm

Great items. I haven’t tried any of these products but we use Thompson’s for all our deck stains and they’re the best. Also I am a lip balm addict so would love to try these balms And that enviro log looks great.

  • Katie V July 17, 2011, 11:40 am

I have never tried any of these products but I have heard about them and I am very interested in trying them. Hopefully I can win this giveaway and have a chance to try them.

  • Terri S. July 17, 2011, 9:59 am

We have tried the regular tube of Bengay without the massaging applicator. I used my regular Bengay on hubby recently after he painted the outside of our house & had sore muscles. It worked great and next time I’ll look for it with the massaging applicator. I would like to try these products especially the Thompson’s Water Seal Oxy Foaming Action Cleanser to clean off my outdoor furniture and deck to make everything clean and fresh now that the outside of our newly painted house looks so nice. :)

  • Alicia C. July 16, 2011, 5:24 pm

My family spends as much time as possible outdoors in the summer. I’ve never tried ANY of these products before, but I’m very interested in the Envirolog!

  • Becky July 15, 2011, 7:13 pm

I haven’t seen or heard of the envirolog..but I want to try it, but another essential is bug spray..those skeeters are awful around here.

  • Marlene V July 15, 2011, 9:15 am

I really like the logs — how great it lasts 3 hours and that saves material from the landfill. Thanks for the chance to win this great giveaway.

  • Amy Stair July 14, 2011, 11:47 pm

Love the Eco Log idea! I’m a big into reusing and repurposing so I’m always looking for new products like that! Thanks!

  • stephanie macdonald July 14, 2011, 10:36 am

I enjoyed reading this page, I have never heard about these products and always like learning about new things. Thanks for sharing and offering this opportunity.

  • JLJMommy July 14, 2011, 8:58 am

Big lip balm users at my house and we LOVE our ecolips! What great prize packs for summer. Spending lots of time outside with camping and visiting relatives that all these products would come in handy.

  • Cindy Merrill July 14, 2011, 3:58 am

We bought a cabin in the woods- right next door to a mosquito infested swamp – up here in Owls Head NY: Either one of these proze packages would be extremely useful, though prehaps prize #2 would be best, since we chop our own wood for our woodstove, which is our only source of heat.

  • ashley n July 13, 2011, 8:19 pm

ive tried the zippo lighters and envirologs and both are great

  • Amanda C July 13, 2011, 3:23 pm

I LOVED this post. Each item is essential for every outdoor adventure. Especially the chapstick (it is so dry here and we don’t go anywhere without chapstick). And even the bengay and laundry detergent. By the time we get home everything is dirty and our backs are sore. This would be a great thing to win.

  • david basile July 13, 2011, 10:48 am

I want to try out the zippo good brand and all the others I have tried have not worked well

  • elizabeth p July 13, 2011, 2:22 am

I love Zippo lighters, they are stylish and reliable.

  • michelle r July 13, 2011, 1:47 am

  • Jean F July 12, 2011, 6:05 am

I haven’t tried any of these, but I would like to try the eco lips the most, even though I probably need the bengay more!

  • Cathleen Lovell July 12, 2011, 12:21 am

My boyfriend and his family love to go camping and we always like to do things outside. Geocaching is something we do quite often and a lot of times it involves going into the woods. Basically, if it has to do with being outdoors we love it and all of these products could come in handy for it! I haven’t tried any of these things and I sure would love to!

  • Kristen July 11, 2011, 6:52 pm

We love to have fires in the winter, so I’d really like to try the Enviro Logs.

  • Liz July 11, 2011, 6:21 pm

Oddly I have not tried any of these. Just goes to show there are so many great new products out there. Id love the foam washer for my sons outdoor toys and our lawn chairs. The Enviro log sounds great!
I recommend Burts Bees Lip Balm. No SPF but its natural and works great. Last time we went camping our car got stuck in the mud and after 15 people declined to help us finally a family agreed to help tow us out of the mud. That was 14 years ago before everyone had cell phones! lol

  • Michael Templeton July 11, 2011, 3:33 pm

I love the ecologs. We use them in our firepit, and have also taken them camping with us. The leave very little residue, you can use them to toast hotdogs and marshmallows, and they outperform any other firelog that we have used. Unfortunately, I can only find them for sale in New Mexico during the winter months, and would love to be able to purchase them year-round!

  • Kate July 11, 2011, 12:25 pm

We haven’t tried any of these but they would be perfect for our first camping trip with the kiddos we have planned for later this summer.

    marshmallows on the fire pit.

  • Anne-Marie T July 10, 2011, 3:53 pm

Other than my back year, I am not really and outdoors person, but I would love to try the BENGAY Pain Relief + Massage balm for my aches and pains after working in the garden. And then I could build a fire with some Enviro-Log firelogs in our fire pit, and sit and relax with a glass of wine.

    I am in Canada.

  • Brett July 10, 2011, 2:41 pm

we use camp dry to re-waterprroof gdiaper liners and also for my uggs

and the outdoor lighter is also good for using on a bot

  • JeannetteLaframboise July 10, 2011, 2:39 pm

    (for the Canadian entry)
I am sad to say that I do need to use Bengay…it seems the older I get along with a chronic pain condition, I need products such as this. I have used Bengay many times and find that it is great for localized pain. When I really overdo it (which I do often and never learn my lesson) I find myself needing every resource under the sun to manage the pain, Bengay included.

As for the Enviro-Log 6-pack of 3lb logs, I have not yet tried this product but would certainly love to give it a go (hint, hint ;0)

Thanks so much for the contest opportunity!

  • Deborah Rosen July 10, 2011, 2:04 pm

I have a Zippo outdoor utility lighter and I love it, but I have to keep it hidden from hubby. I use it when we use the charcoal grill, the firepit and when I light outdoor candles. OK, I use it for indoor candles, too.

  • Dara Nix July 10, 2011, 2:03 pm

I haven’t tried any of these items, but I am most excited about trying the Zippo’s Outdoor Utility Lighter! I LOVE the fact that it is refillable! I can’t tell you how many of those “cheap” utility lighters we go through during the course of the year. Whether it’s for lighting the grill or lighting candles during storm-related power outages …. they just don’t seem to last long at all!

  • Amanda Alvarado July 10, 2011, 1:36 pm

We really don’t camp but we do go to the beach! LOL The zippo lighter would be awesome for starting the pit when it’s supper windy at the beach! The logs would definately be used in our backyard in a fire pit this winter! I can find use for all of these items but this would get too long! :-) Thank you for making this so simple!

  • Joe C. July 10, 2011, 12:26 pm

The Zippo outdoor utility lighter would be very nice to have as would the water repellent.

  • Penny Snyder July 10, 2011, 7:26 am

Would love to win these products – we love camping, hiking, & sitting by the campfire & these products would come in handy. The logs sound like a great product to use!

  • Lillea July 10, 2011, 4:03 am

I would appreciate the logs because I’ve been concerned about the toxicity of the standard type sold in stores.

  • Susan Bryant July 10, 2011, 1:04 am

We have one of the Outdoor Zippo lighters & they are AMAZING!!! I love that it is refillable and it is so much better than the cheap candle-type lighters you buy! It stays lit and you can get your firepit started very easily with it! I haven;t tried any of the other items, so I can’t vouch for them! Our other MAJOR go to item are the Off! Clip ons! We always take them with us when we are camping & I think they work so well at keeping the mosquitoes away!!

  • Kimberly July 9, 2011, 11:46 pm

We have use Kiwi products before. My husband treated our tent with the Kiwi Heavy Duty Fabric Protector. We like the product very much.

  • Jessi G July 9, 2011, 11:31 pm

I have tried Eco Lips (Moonstone) and I love it! One of my favorite lip balms! I have never heard of the Enviro Logs…sound neat! We have gone camping once and we weren’t prepared at all. We got bit up by mosquitoes and chiggers! Terrible time we had.(It was our first time) I definitely plan to go camping again…I’ll just be sure to prepare better! :)

  • Amanda Larson July 9, 2011, 9:38 pm

My go to summer outdoor product is EcoSMART’s natural bug repellant. It works wonderful and is safe for the whole family including kids and pets! :)

  • Karla Sceviour July 9, 2011, 6:38 pm

these all sound amazing. I haven’t tried any of them, I don’t believe. the logs sound nice because we have a fire pit now…I need to try these out, see if they help keep the fire burning for us. sometimes it’s hard. and the massage item you first listed sounds amazing.

Growing up my family went camping a lot! Now that I have a family of my own i want to continue camping. My kids are now 2 & 3 and a little easier to handle in the outdoor environment! I look forward to all the memories we will create as we travel. I have never tried any of these products but I would love to try them :)

My favorite outdoor product is my Young Living Essential Oil Blend – Purification. It keeps the bugs away without using the harsh pesticides. I look forward to more camping items as we will be doing lots of camping as a family event.
