“Mom, what’s for dessert!?” my oldest son asked after dinner one night, as if having dessert were just a given.
My son’s question startled me, because I hadn’t prepared anything at all. Nightly desserts have never been the norm for our family! But with so many summertime birthday parties and gatherings, my boys quickly got used to having a sweet treat nearly every night after dinner!
We had to deal with some disappointment as we weaned the kids off the dessert routine. But it didn’t last long. Generally if I kept an upbeat, matter of fact tone when I announced we weren’t having anything more after our meal, they quickly moved on to post-dinner play time.
To ease the transition, I would pull out some healthy dessert recipes, or sometimes offer just a small snack after the meal. Applesauce, graham crackers, or pretzels usually satisfied their snack craving without creating a big “dessert” show!
Now, just a few weeks later, I can end dinner with, “Who wants an apple?” and I get just about the same cheering as when the birthday cake and ice cream were brought out!
Some healthy dessert recipes!
Now, mind you, I am a “sweets” girl, and definitely not above indulging. I just don’t want my kids to expect sugary treats after every meal. And I also want them to know there are treats that don’t have to be full of sugar!!
There ARE times when dessert is appropriate after dinner, and you can be choosy about what you serve. Find recipes with a few whole food ingredients, alternatives to sugar (like honey or maple syrup) and lots of protein (nuts!) can boost desserts to a healthier level.
Several years ago I reviewed a Yonanas blender, which is always a fun alternative to ice cream. Kids don’t even know they’re simply eating blended whole fruits! There’s still sugar content, of course, but it’s completely natural with no additives of any kind! Here’s a few more healthy dessert recipes you could try with your family!
