Sorry for the delay in posting… I was busy counting our cloth diapers… Just recently, we started putting our baby in the church nursery for part of the service (which is another whole post – look out!). One reason to be nervous was the fact that we cloth diaper.
I had (well-meaning) people (who I love!) tell me I should put disposables on the baby for the nursery so the workers wouldn’t have to “deal” with cloth diapers. I was aghast! I mean, choosing to cloth diaper isn’t exactly a part-time decision. We cloth diaper for health and economic reasons. If we put disposables on the baby every time we need a sitter or drop him off at the church nursery, then who benefits? Not my baby – now he’s wearing plastic and chemicals. Not me – now I’m out more money I have to spend on disposables!
So… while I wanted to consider the workers in the nursery, I felt it would be missing the point to use ‘sposies for nursery time. So we are sticking to cloth diapers in the nursery. I offer to come change him myself if they want me to, and besides, he hardly needs to be changed in the nursery anyway since he’s only in there about an hour. So, it’s pretty much been a non-issue.
And you know what? The reception to cloth diapers in our church nursery has been warm, in my opinion (unless people are just really good at faking it!). Older moms are totally into it – they remember cloth diapering their kids. So I found them to be supportive and not at all phased by my statement “we’re using cloth diapers.” Younger moms are intrigued by the styles and colors of cloth diapers and want to inspect the designs and snaps.
Even better – I know that by cloth diapering in public, I’m raising awareness of how fun and easy cloth diapering can be, because people notice his diapers and we chat about them for a few minutes. Is that subversive of me? hee hee. Maybe. And if it lets me continue to CD full time and gets people interested in cloth diapering, then no harm done, right?

I have been blown away by how supportive my family and husband are about the whole cloth diapering thing. And since only they watch the kids, I don't have to worry. We don't own a disposable so I don't have any to offer. Actually, we have some "easy" diapers and that's what they use (anything with velcro). And the cuter the better.When we're out, we try to coordinate our diapers with the outfit but my husband insists on "flashy" diapers so someone will comment and he can tell them how wonderful and easy they are. He really is a wonderful ambassador.

I totally agree; I don't like the idea of using disposables "for others" at ALL! The choice to cloth diaper is very important to us; why would I put that "on hold" for convenience? Our baby is going to grandma's overnight soon, and grandma asked if she could use disposables. I'm planning on sending her with a GroVia shell and some Bio-soakers (a compromise), but usually I would just send her with cloth! And, I LOVE when people ask questions about our diapers. I do try to show them off as I "casually" change diapers in public! Ha ha!

I haven't really had to deal with it...yet. And I have to admit - I will use a disposable if I need to. But whenever I'm out - I bring my cutest ones! I cannot wait to read about Asher and the nursery because I can't seem to send P and one of us ends up in the lobby during service :)
