With a newborn in the house, I’m reminded daily of the tender sensitivity of baby skin. My baby is pretty resilient, but even he gets skin irritations from his nails and clothing. I always apply a little lotion when I see a red mark, to help soothe and heal.
However, I’ve become more savvy about reading labels on body care products for my children. Not all products labeled “natural” are on the up-and-up! Petroleum is natural after all! And if you see the word “fragrance,” chances are it is petroluem based. And, some ingredients when combined in the bottle release formaldehyde – since it is not intentionally added to the product, the manufacturers are not required to list that on the label!!
I’m pleased to share with you that Seventh Generation recently introduced Wee Generation – a 97% plant derived baby care line! It’s gluten-free, endorsed by Healthy Child, Healthy World, and has the USDA Biobased Certification.
It’s so important to select the best products for your skin, but especially for baby’s, as they begin a lifetime of environmental contamination even in utero! BPAs, flame retardants, and other chemicals have been found in both breast milk, and ubilical cord blood. Since your skin is the largest organ on your body, it’s important not to let it absorb carcinogenic ingredients from body care products!
Wee Generation has every ingredient listed on the label – and none of the bad ones you need to watch for (like triclosan or dyes!). Also they use natural ingredients like olive oil to moisturize skin naturally. Plus, you’ll find more information about all their ingredients listed right on their website!
I love how the lotions feel…I use it for our baby’s massage time! The foaming bath wash is our favorite product of all… and the bubble bath makes super amounts of bubbles!
The webinar I attended last week taught me more about making healthy choices for baby care, and I also learned some great tips on another healthy choice for babies: baby massage!
Since touch is the primary way babies learn about their world, massage can help boost brain activity, promote healthy sleep, ease tummy problems, and even boost immune levels! Besides, baby massage is a great bonding moment for parents with their child.
Here’s some tips for baby massage:
- Choose the best time and place – a quiet, familiar spot is best. Some babies like massages anytime, others before sleeping.
- Choose a good massage oil – or a lotion with natural ingredients. You can even use just olive oil!
- Be comfortable – make a soft place to lay baby, and keep your hands clean and warm!
- Ask permission – here’s something you might not think of – your baby is a person too, and might not WANT a massage at the exact moment you wish to give him one! Talk to your baby and ask if they are ready – they will be all smiles and clue you in when they are ready!
- Know when not to massage – when baby is sick or irritable, or if skin is rashy or broken, don’t massage. Also, avoid massaging 48-72 hours after vaccinations, and 30 minutes after eating.
Now want some “YAY!!” Two winners will receive a package of Wee Generation products – a $50 value that includes:
