Easy, No Roll Oil Pie Crust Recipe
I typically made the traditional butter crust for my pies (which are delicious, and you can get my better pie baking tips here to see how to make that kind of crust easily!). But sometimes you need something fast and no fuss. So that’s when an oil pie crust recipe comes in handy.
Over the years, I’ve shifted the variety and quality of the oils I cook with. I didn’t want to continue using corn and canola oils typically available on the shelf. LifeOiL, a blend of sunflower, safflower, and olive oil, is an all-purpose cooking oil with a light taste and appearance.
I love making apple pies for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year I wanted to try an oil-based crust instead of my usual butter crust.
What’s a No-Roll oil pie crust anyway?
After doing some research into oil pastries, I concluded an oil pie crust recipe is really the same as my regular butter crust recipe, just using oil. This was great news for me, because I often run out of butter when making large batches of pies (also, butter is REALLY expensive for baking!).
However, an oil pie crust can be a little more challenging to roll out, as it crumbles easier than a butter crust. Sooooo… I improvised. Instead of rolling the crust, I simply “pressed” the crust into the bottom of the pie dish. Then added my filling. Then I crumbled the other half of the crust on top. Bake as usual!
My no roll oil pie crust tasted the same as a rolled crust, just with the added crumble texture! So there you have it – easy no-roll oil pie crust! Here’s how to make it!
Recipe
- 2 cups of flour, sifted
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2/3 cup vegetable oil like LifeOiL
- 3 T cold water (the icier the better IMO)
- Whisk together the flour and salt, then add the oil slowly. Blend with a fork or pastry cutter (I use a fork!) until you get a meal-like texture (which is basically little crumbs like granola). If you need a bit more moisture, slowly add the cold water until crust begins sticking to itself. You MAY not need the water at all. If too dry, add a teaspoon more oil.
- Gently press dough into a ball. Divide in half.
- Press one half of the crust into the pie plate, working it up the sides to the rim. Crust will be about 1/8th inch thick.
- Add filling.
- Crumble the other half of the crust on top.
- Bake at 450 degrees. 30-60 minutes depending on the filling (for canned filling about 30 minutes is good. For sliced apples, 45-60 minutes depending on how thickly you sliced the fruit).
LifeOiL was great for this no roll oil pie crust because it has a neutral flavor, so it doesn’t alter the flavor or add a heavy oily flavor. Plus, this recipe was quick and easy to pull together. Meaning we had pie on the table in just about an hour!
