I dread the day he gets his first illness. Dread. It. Last summer he had a bout of congestion, probably teething – and I slept on our camping mattress in his room to make sure he was breathing through the night. Aside from running the humidifier and “snorkeling” his nose with the aspirator, there’s not much you can do for congestion in one so young.

As parents we have to consider: when our baby gets sick – what WILL we give him? The over-medicating of children concerns me. And besides, I was just reading a Dr. Sears article about how traditional cough medications are not approved by the FDA for children under 4 anyway. I know I’ll want to give my baby something to relieve symptoms, but I don’t want to put him at risk from side effects. So I was happy to discover Maty’s Healthy Products.

We tried the Kid’s All Natural Cough Syrup and the All-Natural Baby Chest Rub. My husband and I each used the cough syrup ourselves when we had mild colds (since it has honey and our baby is not a year yet, nor is he sick, we haven’t given it to him). It’s refreshing to actually understand the ingredient list on a remedy! Lemon peel, cinnamon, apple cider vinegar and other perfectly normal components make this cough syrup a powerhouse of natural healing. Each ingredient performs a specific healthful function – like Lemon Balm for anti-spasmodic, calming purposes along with mildly anti-viral properties.

The Caramel Banana flavoring will appeal to children, and although we did find the aftertaste a bit “wheaty” it was nothing like the bitter taste of regular cough syrup. Anyway, you don’t want your cough syrup tasting TOO much like candy, otherwise your kids might actually want to eat it!

The All-Natural Baby Chest Rub smells fantastic with tons of great essential oils (Lavender, Eucalyptus, Coconut, Chamomile, and more) to calm and soothe your baby. Again, I love being able to identify every ingredient in the product instead of wondering “What is THAT?!” Since there’s no petroleum or menthol, you can use this rub on babies three months and older. I’ve put it on my feet and baby’s feet when we get a touch of congestion. I find the fragrance alone to be worthwhile, but this rub definitely clears out your nasal passages without being overly harsh.

I can’t protect our baby from ever getting sick, but I am glad there are moms out there creating alternative healthy choices like Maty’s Healthy Products for when we do face illnesses. Now we won’t have to add the fear of side effects to the situation.
