Each year for my boys’ birthdays, I like to make them something to wear to the party! I’ve done iron-on, fabric paints, fabric markers, and other types of DIY T shirt crafts. I just love how this year’s DIY Penguin T Shirt craft turned out for the boys!
DIY Penguin T Shirt Craft
Supplies needed:
- Black t-shirt
- Steam-A-Seam Lite (2 sheets)
- white fabric (t-shirt sized block)
- black fabric (minimal)
- orange fabric
- 2 large white buttons
- 2 medium white buttons
- orange thread
- white thread
Making this penguin T Shirt craft is mostly as simple as cutting and ironing. Then some easy sewing finishing. Here’s the steps I took!
Onto one sheet of the Steam-A-Seam, trace a large heart shape that will fit most of the front of whatever size T shirt you are using. Make the heart more long than wide. Following the package directions, peel away one side and iron onto the white fabric. Then cut out heart shape. Iron this onto the black T shirt in the center.
Next, trace and cut out three smaller, wider hearts out of the Steam-A-Seam and iron onto orange fabric. I used terry towel material for a textured look. Iron one heart onto the white heart for a nose. Turn the other two upside-down and iron onto the bottom of the heart for feet.
To finish the T shirt, cut out two small circles and iron onto black. Cut those out and iron above the nose for eyes.
Stack a white, then a black button, and sew onto the black circle to form eyes.
Use a tight zig-zag stitch in matching thread color to stitch around the white and orange heart shapes. This will give you a nicer finished edge and ensure that the Steam-A-Seam doesn’t lift off in the wash (if using terry fabric, this is absolutely necessary as the textured fabric will cause the interfacing to lift).
Now isn’t this penguin T shirt craft adorable for a little kid’s birthday party? I sort of wish I’d made one for myself!
