A friend recently introduced me to the deliciousness of fruit salsa with pita chips. So of course, I had to try my hand at making this treat myself. Although perhaps better as a June recipe, when strawberries are at their peak, this strawberry salsa dip for kids still appealed to our sweet tooth in August. And, with apples coming up on peak harvest, it still capitalizes on fresh, in season fruit flavor!
Strawberry Apple Salsa Dip Recipe
This simple strawberry salsa dip recipe could be modified any number of ways. My version includes hints of lime and mint for a summery flavor!
Ingredients:
- 5-6 large ripe strawberries, rinsed, hulled, and diced
- 1 large green apple (or other firm variety), washed, diced
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- Honey or maple syrup
- Sprigs of mint, chopped, to taste
- Pita chips (the Stacy’s kind with cinnamon sugar are a real treat with this salsa!)
Directions:
- Rinse and chop fruit according to directions above. I used a box chopper to make it easier.
- Toss fruit with lime juice and chopped mint. Drizzle with honey or maple syrup to sweeten to taste.
- Letting the fruit sit about an hour will meld flavors.
- Enjoy with pita chips!
Another idea for this dip, is to blend fruit so it’s more “saucy.” This is the way I originally had it, and its’ a little easier to scoop up that way. I wanted a chunkier dip this time around, and it made for easier clean up to just leave it chunky.
When strawberries aren’t in season, I would suggest trying this dip with frozen berries and blending it, so you don’t have to worry about sour or underripe fruits. You could probably pair this with graham crackers for another way to dip. Or use it as a topping on pancakes or waffles!
What other variations would you try with this kind of strawberry apple salsa dip recipe?
