Newborn Diaper Rental at Modern Cloth Diapers

With my first son, we weren’t able to use cloth until about week 8 or 9, simply because the one-size diapers I had purchased…well, they don’t really truly fit right out of the starting gate. Babies fit better in those around 11-12 pounds. (and those bigger diaper don’t fit well in newborn clothing which is not made for big fluffy butts!).

This time, I wanted to start CD-ing right away, so I turned to Modern Cloth Diapers as I’d heard they had a good cloth diaper rental program! You probably don’t want to sink hundred of dollars into a full stash that only lasts about three months. So renting is definitely the way to go!

“The intention of the newborn diaper rental program is to help you bridge that gap of time until one-size diapers fit well.” ~Modern Cloth

I’m not sure why anybody would NOT want to rent cloth diapers! It’s easy, and makes sense! At Modern Cloth, you simply pick out the diapers you want, pay a deposit and a rental fee, and your diapers arrive for your use!But wait, there are lots more fun details!

Used or new? You can save a little money if you opt to rent gently used newborn cloth. I went with the new diapers, which cost a bit more.

Prefolds? All-in-Ones? Fitteds? You have so many options to choose from with the Modern Cloth Newborn Rental Program: Bummis covers/prefolds, BumGenius AIO, Kissaluvs Fitteds, Bummis TiniFit, FuzziBunz XS, or Thirsties Duo Wrap. Wow – that’s choice!!!

Your rental will be shipped several weeks prior to your due date (lucky for me, as I was early!), but your 12 weeks of renting officially starts on the day the baby is born! Here’s my newborn “stash”:

When 12 weeks is up, you have several options:

  1. Return the diapers (clean and undamaged) to get your deposit back – either as cash, as store credit, or as reverse store credit (like a super bonus for reordering before you return your package!).
  2. Extend your rental (in 4 week increments if you feel your baby still fits them well).
  3. Purchase/keep all or some of the diapers if you wish – maybe you’ve just fallen in love with the dipes! or want to have them handy for the next baby! You can purchase one or all of your package! (I am considering this – just because they are so stinkin’ cute!!).

Modern Cloth made the process so easy. I should have rented more diapers – they recommend having 24-30 newborn diapers, and I only rented 12, because I already had some, and was getting more to review… but I don’t have as many as I really need so we do laundry a lot!

I decided to rent a set of 6 BumGenius AIOs and a set of 6 Bummis / Tot Bots TiniFits. Here’s what they look like:

BumGenius AIOs – How can you not love anything in the BumGenius line? Just like their larger cousins, these newborn diapers are high quality construction, with a terrifically trim fit! They velcro closed in front, and require no stuffing or assembly of any kind – making these by far the easiest cloth diaper I’ve ever owned. They do say they are ultra-absorbent, but I liked to add a bamboo cloth wipe to mine to boost the absorbency (I think my boy pees a lot!). The gentle elastics also keep blowouts from even happening! While they are “quick drying” compared to a larger diaper, it still takes a bit of time to air dry these diapers. These diapers fit from 6-12 pounds… meaning my baby is already on his way OUT of these as he weighed 10 pounds, 3 ounces at his 4 week checkup! Sadness!

Bummis / Tot Bots TiniFits – These diapers are squishy and cute! Technically an All-in-One diapers, they have a fold-out, stuffable liner that is attached. So you just tuck it inside the pocket, and let it agitate out in the wash. Because it folds out, it dries faster (yes, true!). I am so lazy, I don’t even stuff the liner inside, I just fold it back on top of itself, and add the little booster that comes with it to the top. All three layers inside this diaper are made with super soft (and fast-drying) minky, making the inside of this diaper my favorite!! These diapers fit babies 5-14 lbs, so it accommodates a larger weight range (phew!).

Both of these diapers have been perfect for newborn cloth diapering! It’s hard for me to say which I like better – although I suppose I’d go with the TiniFits just because they will fit baby longer. I like to use the BumGenius during the day and the TiniFits at night for because I think they absorb a bit more.

It’s been fun clothing diapering a teeny-beany baby! I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Thank you for this review. I was wondering what you thought and what you rented. We used BG AIO size small as well as tot bot (not tiny fit) with our daughter, too. I am enjoying all the newborn diaper stuff and am so glad you are having a great time cloth diapering your newest little boy.

Awe. Your son is already losing some of his newborn look. Back on topic though, I like it when rental places don't start your rental time period until your baby actually arrives. I used a prefold service for years and my local lady would pre-deliver a half weeks' worth of diapers. When my baby arrived I just called to let her know and she would bring the second half of my diapers on the next delivery date. It was so easy and she picked the diapers up twice a week which was great. Take care and keep on enjoying your sweet little boys.
