I’ve learned a few things on our year-plus long road of potty training. (Still going but with much improvement!).
And yes, I tried and am probably the only one that managed to fail the so-called fail-proof “72 hour potty trained kid” system. Sigh.
Anyway… here’s a few things I learned:
1. When your child is ready, they are ready. I thought my son was ready last year because he was so curious about the potty and he wanted so badly to go. But he wasn’t physically ready to control his bladder or recognize he was full.
2. Be sure your child can take his pants off solo. They can go the nakey route to learn initially, but at some point they gotta put their pants on! If kids struggle to remove pants they may not make it to the potty in time. When our son first showed interest in the potty, he didn’t have the motor skills to take off his pants. I didn’t realize this was holding us back until I saw progress soar once he mastered getting his pants on and off!
3. Watch your child’s habits. If you are familiar with Elimination Communication (EC) you probably know this. But if not… children usually develop patterns of when they “go” as well as locations they typically have accidents. I found by watching the clock and what area of the room he was gravitating toward, I could snag him at the right time to ensure a successful “go” on the potty!
4. Get an easy-to-use cloth trainer for independence! There’s a lot of cloth trainers on the market now, making it easy to keep saving money, reducing trash, and avoiding chemicals as you teach your child to use the potty!
Now, I’ve tried several cloth trainers, but lately, I’ve been loving the new Bummis Training Pants, which ThanksMama.com sent me (free for review) to try out.
They are easy on, easy off, pretty much just like “big kid” underwear works. The main difference is the ample padding of 3 absorbent layers in the middle and waterproof outer layer.
The inner layer is a soft cotton-hemp that allows the child to feel wet. Between the inner/outer layers are two more layers: microfiber and cotton terry. So you have your absorbency covered with this variety!
I have found this cloth trainer not only to be among the easiest for my son to take off and put on, but also highly absorbent. In fact, even though Bummis states it’s not a cloth diaper for use at nap/night, I have let my son sleep in it at nap time (he is NOT nap trained yet) and it’s been fine.
These trainers start with size small for 18 pound babies, making them a great trainer for early learners or EC’ers.
Another great fact: the training pants are made in Canada and with many North American materials.

What a great product! I can see where this would help with the transition to going on the potty full time...
