Ever since my brother-in-law showed a YouTube video to my children (involving an 80’s style banana rapping about “Peanut Butter Jelly Time!”), the kids clamor daily for the same sandwich.
Yes, they don’t even say the “and” anymore. It’s just “Peanut Butter Jelly.”
Every day.
Hey, I’m a big fan of the PBJ myself. It’s comfort food. And maybe, going outside the box isn’t the important thing. How about being creative “inside the box?” A PlanetBox, that is!!
Lately, I’ve been taking the kids out before lunch so I’ve had to pack more lunches for traveling. Guess what I pack them in these days!?
PlanetBox sent me their stainless steel bento box, and asked me to collect my favorite healthful lunch ideas for kids.
Here’s some creative lunch ideas for kids for when they get stuck on one food.
Add on! Give them that PBJ but slip some bananas into the PBJ. Use whole wheat bread. Use no-sugar added Peanut Butter. Sometimes it’s not terrible to stick with what they like and just modify the ingredients.
Provide variety and manage portions with bento-style lunches. Whether I actually tuck them into a bento box or not, I love little “snack trays” at lunch. All that finger food is hard for kids to resist.
Let kids help pack their lunches – create a chart that shows what kinds of items need to go into each lunch box! (Veggie, fruit, dairy, drink, etc).
Pack lunches in the colors of the rainbow. OR, pick one color and make their entire lunch green. Or red. Or yellow. (Purple can be a challenge!).

The PlanetBox lunch box and carrier are the perfect answer to any mom looking to improve their kids’ lunchtime eating habits. With four main compartments and two extra containers, you can pack a lunch that will satisfy both you and the kids. (I even tucked my son’s vitamins inside! He’s gonna be so psyched!).
The carry case holds a water bottle and the larger container. The PlanetBox keeps solid foods in place even though schoolchildren’s rough handling (trust me, I tried, mimicking all the moves I’ve ever seen a middle schooler make!). The foods will jostle a bit in their compartments but they don’t shift into other compartments; still, avoid anything mushy or liquid in the PlanetBox as I bet that would seep between compartments.
And, what’s just as good as providing your kids a nutritious lunch? Packing their lunch in a reusable container that will stand the test of time. Your kids will grow up with this lunchbox, and you won’t find yourself throwing box after plastic box away at the end of each school year.
PlanetBox offers cute magnets for kids to decorate the lid of their PlanetBox with, so they can personalize to their heart’s content. While I get to personalize the inside with healthful food choices!
What are your favorite healthy lunch ideas?
Thanks to PlanetBox for sending an item for review. All opinions are my own.
