Know what makes a great birthday gift and isn’t really “another toy”? A great board game that entertains and educates!
Now, not too many board games are workable for the toddler crowd, but I have one to share that my two-year old is just about ready for!
It’s Grandma’s Trunk™ Alphabet Game from Educational Insights – a game that is really 5-in-1! The letter cards come in a little “suitcase” trunk and includes 26 letter cards with bright and cheerful illustrations, 26 riddle cards (that coordinate with the images on the letter cards) and a playing guide.
There’s five ways to play and learn with Grandma’s Trunk: practice letter names and sounds, learn alphabetical order build memory skills, create stories, and play fun riddle games!
Since this game is really for K+, I invented a new way to play with my 2-year-old. I pulled three letter cards from the stack and placed them in front of my son. Say, the A/apple, B/boot, and Z/Zebra card. Then I pulled the riddle cards that matched, and used the clues to ask my son a simple question: “Which one do you wear on your feet?” He identified the boots from the set of cards! We had fun with the riddles!
We also spent time having him identify the objects on each card along with the letter. He already knows the letters of his name, so this game was especially fun when he came across a letter he knew!
I know these cards will come in handy whenever we practice our letters, and eventually we’ll build up to the more complex game ideas!
Grandma’s Trunk is another great educational resource from Educational Insights (who I had the pleasure of checking out at the Toy Fair ’12 a couple weeks ago!).

I really like how you adapted this for A. T Rex is really getting into games these days. Each night he does 30 minutes of board games with his dad while I put Lil Sis to bed. They play Cooties, Don't Break the Ice, Ants in the Pants, a fishing game. We just picked up a board game of "Angry Birds" because all his friends are playing the video game but we don't allow video games so the board game is a compromise. Although, he still has a few more stickers to earn before he can cash in for the game. Games are so good for so many reasons. Right up there after reading in my opinion.
