I had never spent the night apart from my baby until this past weekend. But hubby and I decided we needed some time to spend together to celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary. So we left our 16-month-old in the care of “Nonna” and drove up the scenic Routes 30 and Historic 7A through Vermont to The Equinox.
We had the blessing of free nights due to some rewards points, so we stayed in a beautifully appointed corner room (which could’ve had better internet access, but that’s okay because I was supposed to be semi-unplugged!). I loved the modern stripe decor of the suite – so chic and different from your average hotel room!
What a lovely weekend! Although the weather was overcast, the clouded Green Mountains still were magnificent out our back window. In fact, the entire hotel property is beautifully manicured and had our stay been longer and the weather nicer, a perfect spot to linger out-of-doors without even having to go anywhere!
I enjoyed “the finer things” from the hotel’s room service and hotel restaurant – a gourmet cheese tray and cappuccinos and chocolates after dinner. I love trying new foods! I discovered I love cheddar, Gouda, and Gruyere!
Although there was little time (or energy! I took a huge nap our first day!) to partake in the luxurious-sounding spa treatments, we relaxed in the outdoor hot tub, staring at the mountains! Wish the indoor pool had been of a temperature I could handle, because I would’ve loved to go swimming! But even hubby found it a bit chill.
I didn’t know when we booked our stay that there are tons of outlet stores in Manchester, Vermont! Since the weather was not great for hiking, we shopped, but most of all relaxed. It’s been over a year since we’ve actually slept through the night, or slept in for a morning! We even saw a handsome and majestic falcon from the resort’s British School of Falconry! It would be fascinating to take a class if we’d had time.
The entire weekend was wonderful, spending time with the man I love. We definitely over-ate delicious food. Go to Ye Old Tavern and The Little Rooster Cafe (where I had the scrumptious Cinnamon Raisin French Toast with Raspberry Butter pictured below!). I would not recommend Gringo Jack’s, as the food is overly priced and seasoned. Well, all the food up there is a bit pricey, because it’s a resort town.
We talked. Read. Wrote. It’s been so long since we had alone time – we have NOT been good about taking advice to have a monthly date night once you have kids. We should. But we just haven’t.
And what was the center of our weekend thoughts and conversation the entire weekend? Our little boy. How we missed him. Wondered what he was doing. Made phone calls every few hours to check in. I’d love to return to The Equinox and bring our son with us – it’d be a lovely stay I am sure!
Spending time alone with your spouse after having children is a blessing. Loving family that care for your children while you’re away is also a huge blessing. But it’s a mixed blessing, because we missed our little guy so very much!
Hearing him on the phone saying, “Mama! Mama!” or hearing how he walked around to all the pictures of my husband and I at my mom’s house saying, “Mama go?” was both sweet and heartbreaking. Fortunately, he did not seem troubled by us being gone, and didn’t cry at all. Just curious and excited to spend a few days with “Nonna” and her “kitty cat.” Still, I doubt we’ll be separated again for quite some time! This mama could barely put him down when we got back home!
How did you feel the first time you spent a night away from your kids?

We've actually never left our girls overnight yet...and they're 2 & 4! We do get out for dates sometimes though...or we did prior to our RV adventure anyway. ;)
Now, we have in-home, after-bedtime dates. :)

Manchester is one of my favorite shopping centers :) I could spend hours in the Yankee Candle store and the Coach store alone!

This is spot on - when we go out without the kids we just keep seeing the other families out with their kids and then miss ours. And then we'll end up talking all about the kids while we're away. We need the break but we also miss them so much. Torn in two directions, really.
We have yet to leave the baby but with T Rex, the first time we were away from him for more than 12 hours was when I was at the hospital giving birth to his sister. We rarely leave our kids but when we do, it's usually with a grandparent or aunt.
Glad you had a great time with your great guy and enjoyed some great food, too.
