Apple pies are kinda like my “thing” and fall is my favorite season. I don’t know if that’s because I’m a New England gal, or because I’m a September birthday or what… but fall + apples are just the best combo!
My mother in law invited us down for family dinner last weekend. I usually bake one of my killer apple pies from my Grandma Howard’s recipe (yes, real butter is essential!). However, baking apple pies can be a bit time consuming! And makes a little bit of a mess on the countertops. This weekend I had NO time, since we’re starting homeschooling and Classical Conversations!
Fortunately, I was on my way out the door for our nearly weekly trip to BJ’s Wholesale Club, so I knew I’d be able to pick up ingredients… but I had to think fast!
What yummy dessert could I whip up quickly. That everyone would like? Well… that would have to be a warm apple crisp, right!?
But that is not all, oh no, that is not all! I had to do something to kick up the flavor on this apple crisp. Which is when serendipity happened!! You see, part of my shopping list included finding the new fall flavor from Bear Naked Sea Salt Caramel Apple granola! Mmm-mmm! The wheels started turning…
I mean, apple crisp comes together pretty quickly but… what if I didn’t have to mix up a lot of ingredients for the topping? What if the topping already came with EXTRA flavor!?
Like… Sea Salt and Caramel Apple!?!?!?!? Voila!
A crisp was born! Yes, I was going to use the Bear Naked Granola on top of my apple crisp! I could not WAIT to find this granola and get home to test out my recipe.
The kids and I finally found the Bear Naked Sea Salt Caramel Apple Granola – not in the cereal aisle like I’d expected – but in the FRONT of the store by the registers!! I guess that is where they keep the new products and / or the back to school snacks! So, if you’re looking for it, check the front first! (and believe me, you’ll want to look for this 3-pack of granola – I’ll tell you more on that later!).
Okay so… here’s how the recipe went. A little tutorial for ya!
While I was at BJ’s Wholesale Club, I also grabbed a big bag of their Earth’s Pride Organic Gala Apples and Nonfat Organic Greek Yogurt. All the other ingredients I had at home.
First step: Core and peel apples. Chop into 1/2″ chunks. Put into a Dutch Oven (oh yes, I forgot to tell you this is ALSO a cast iron dutch oven recipe, but that would really have made my title too long: Cast Iron Dutch Oven Sea Salt and Caramel Apple Crisp Recipe. PHEW! (Sounds rather amazing though, doesn’t it!?)
Second Step: Mix 1/3 cup flour with cinnamon and toss with the apples. Set aside and preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Third Step: Make the crisp topping by mixing together 1/3 cup brown sugar with 1-1/2 to 2 cups of Bear Naked Sea Salt Caramel Apple Granola. Melt 1 stick of butter and pour over. Blend well.
Fourth Step: Sprinkle the crisp topping over the apples and put into the heated oven. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until apples are crisp tender. You have to watch with Gala apples, they aren’t really a great cooking apple but chopped a bit larger and with watchful cooking, I got them JUST right!
Fifth Step: Top with Greek Yogurt blended with a little maple syrup, or whipped cream, or ice cream! Or just enjoy plain, although there’s nothing plain about this recipe!
This apple crisp recipe turned out fantastic!!!! It had this burst of sweet and savory flavors – the juicy apples kissed with a dash of sea salt. Caramel flavors and odors spinning through the whole dessert just added a heavenly layer of complexity that you usually don’t get in a plain apple crisp recipe.
I don’t think I’ll ever make my own apple crisp topping again! Using the Bear Naked Granola added so much flavor and of course paired perfectly with the apples. And it was fast because I hardly had to measure out anything since the fall flavors were already packed into the granola! Yummy!!!
