Part of my spring cleaning in the 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge involved sorting through the kids’ clothing both for sizes and season!
Our baby is rapidly growing and so he doesn’t fit into too many spring and summer items that his older brother wore (they are off seasonally when it comes to hand me downs). Here’s some of my strategies for switching out kids’ clothing each season.
1. Make size sorting an ongoing process. I have bins on the closet shelf for each of the boys. When I put something on them that doesn’t fit right anymore, it immediately goes in the bin. Or if it’s okay for one more wear, I keep tabs on the item and snag it out of the laundry to stash it in the “too small” bin right away. This has really kept both overflowing stacks of “too smalls,” and rummaging for something that fits to a minimum.
2. Store clothing by fit, not by tag size. I learned this with my first son. I used to store all the clothing by the tag size. But some baby/kid clothes run small, so I had many times when I grabbed a new-never-worn item from the closet that said it would fit 2T, but didn’t fit my 2 year old! Already too small! Wah! So… when I stashed them away for the next baby, even though it said 2T on the tag, I put it into the 18 month bin, because I knew it “fit” more like those sizes.
3. Back to basics! Just like with adults, new clothes you purchase should be mostly basics, with maybe a few trendy tops thrown in (unless, of course, money is no object!). Stick with stripes, solids, and bright pops of color for a classic look. Like these green pants and navy striped tee – so cute for my little guys!
Found them at Ruum, a back to basics line of clothing for newborn babies on up to boys and girls size 14! (I was sent a gift card to shop and share!).
So those are my tips for switching out seasonal clothing for kids:
Get bins. Sort by fit. Stay classic.
Got it!? The weather’s getting warmer, so get swapping!
How do you tackle / sort / store / shop for kids’ clothing?
Thanks to Ruum for sending a gift card for my review! All opinions are 100% my own.

I like spring cleaning when it comes to my children's clothes. It is always so sad though too, as it reminds me of how fast they are growing and I admit that I end up keeping probably more than I should.
