Tot Exploratons: Follow the Trail!

Sometimes it’s hard to find age appropriate activities for children. I mean, ones they want to do! I find great ideas on blogs, magazines, from friends. But when I try to implement them, my son doesn’t always have the same idea as me!

I tried a few activities this week in anticipation of this post, but nothing seemed to strike his fancy or hold his attention much. So, although This week’s Tot Exploration activity was not quite as successful as I thought it could be, I will share what I did in the hopes it might spark an idea for you!

Since my son is very kinesthetic – he loves to run around and around our living area – I thought I would create a little “trail” for him to follow. I gave him his mail truck, and then placed his alphabet blocks in a Hansel and Gretel-like trail for him to follow throughout the house. My plan was that he would pick up the blocks as he went, giving him more activity while he pushed his cart.

At first he wasn’t clear on what I wanted, so he just pushed his cart over the blocks! I showed him again, and then he walked in front of me; as I pushed his mail truck, he picked up blocks and deposited them in the cart.

He finally did push and collect the trail of blocks for a little bit, but overall seemed more interested in doing just one part of the activity or the other….still, in the end, I discovered what was great about this activity is we were playing together.

After a couple rounds of following the trail, it devolved into stacking the blocks and knocking them over…I think this particular activity either needs some repetition or some tweaking… But what do you think?

I think this is a great idea. I am going to try it with my son tomorrow. I think he will act similar to your son, but I am trying to work on the "cleaning up" with him, so this will be a fun activity. Thanks for sharing. I just found your website on Pinterest, and I love it.

That's a cute little toy. As he gets older he'll do better as they are growing and learning so fast! But yes I agree it's just getting on the floor and having a little fun together that matters sometimes :)
