Writing Strong Paragraphs

Beginning writers learn to find main ideas, take notes, and restate ideas. These writing skills are important for all future writing. This course is for the beginning writer who needs support with writing clear and organized paragraphs. The focus is on structure, with a style lesson on Week 3.

Students will use nonfiction sample texts as models for their written work. They will take notes and rewrite from the source texts. They will not generate their own topics for writing in this course.

During class students will share work from previous weeks. Written assignments will not be graded by me. Parents can elect to assess/grade at home. I can work with parents to scale the work for each student.

Different source texts can be used for students who take this class a second time.

To enroll, students should have proficient handwriting abilities for note-taking OR have a parent "scribe" to take down their words during class.

Picture Prompt Storytelling

Oral storytelling is one of the oldest forms of preserving history and the emotions of events. It also was an effective teaching tool and useful for entertainment. The power of storytelling to inspire, illustrate points, and make people care about your message is well-known.

In this light-hearted storytelling class, students learn elements of storytelling (setting, character, conflict, resolution). Students will “retell” from the picture prompt and craft their story using details they invent. The focus is on structure and invention; some style techniques will be introduced as well.

Students write a new story each week to practice the story structure and skills. This is not a class to work on stories created previously.

Students share work from the previous week. Writing is not graded by me. Parents can elect to assess/grade at home. I can assist parents with how to assess and scale the work for their student.

Prerequisites: Note-taking & Outlining class (or similar), proficient at writing clear sentences and paragraphs. Ability to handwrite papers, type, or have a parent "scribe" for them. My Retelling Stories class is a helpful prerequisite, but I cover many of the same basic skills in this class.

Poetry Writing for Kids

Poetry is "the best words in the best order." In this poetry writing workshop class, kids will learn to play with words and have fun expressing themselves descriptively.

In April, students will learn to write a

  • simile poem,
  • personification poem,
  • form poem,
  • haiku (syllabic poem)

Different poetry styles will be offered in May.

Each workshop includes a live minilesson, mentor poems to read, enjoy, and discuss, brainstorming time, and time to write and share.

Students share work from the previous week. Writing is not graded by me. Parents can elect to assess/grade at home. I can assist parents with how to assess and scale the work for their student.

To enroll, students should have the ability to handwrite or type OR have a parent "scribe" to take down their words during class.

What People Are Saying...

ALISA DANNECKER

-HOMESCHOOL MOM-

I have two boys working through IEW with Julie. My 6th grader naturally loves writing, and Julie has helped nurture his enthusiasm while showing him how to maintain a sense of coherence and organization in his writing. My 4th grader does not naturally love writing, but under Julie’s steady cheerfulness and encouragement, he has begun to find joy in the process. Julie presents the lessons clearly, so that during the week my boys feel equipped to create their own work. As a busy homeschool mom, I am so thankful to have her as a resource.

MONICA SWIFT

-EDUCATOR / COACH / ENTREPRENUER-

The #1 praise I can give for Julie is her beautiful and awe inspiring relationship with her Heavenly Father. Whether this resonates with you or not, you still benefit because it is the filter for all Julie is and does. The result is a standard of excellence that pours into everything she sets her heart on. With Julie you get the experience of a Mom, Homeschool Mom, Certified Teacher, Author, and Entrepreneur. She teaches adults and children alike with an ease worth learning how to bring into any homeschool setting. I’m a professional educator myself with over 20 years in the field, and learning shines anew for me each time I’m in her company. But most importantly, as a Mom and now an Ima (grandma), the seal of approval is knowing I would eagerly sign my child up to learn with Julie.
