3 Healthy Choices We’re Making

Sometimes the quest to “be healthy” is overwhelming… we’re taking it slow by making these healthy changes in our life:

  1. Organic diet – we’re switching over slowly because of cost. I want to find the organic foods I really like and not spend a ton of money on new brands I don’t end up loving!
  2. Organic gardening – I’ll be writing more on this as the spring/summer goes on. This is a new venture for us, but one I am very interested in exploring!
  3. Less Sugar – I think I fail at this every day. But high sugar in a diet is unhealthy for so many obvious reasons. Yet all foods seem to be loaded with it. And it tastes SO good! Still, we’re drinking less soda, buying only 100% juices, and trying to stick to waters and seltzers. Also, we’re trying to switch to alternative sweeteners like Stevia and Sucanat rather than straight white sugars.

Finding a balance that gives you a healthy lifestyle is not easy. Many parents end up eating too much simply from being on the run, or at work with tempting treats brought in by coworkers (I have been guilty of that!). I found I overate at work a lot as a teacher.

Portion control is one way avoid overeating. I got to check out Healthy Choice meals last week to see how their frozen meals tasted. Healthy Choice is the only major brand in its category that can call 100% of its products “healthy” as defined by the FDA. Did you know that foods that use “healthy” in their name are held to higher nutrition standards by the FDA?

Each meal must be:

  • Low in fat
  • Low in saturated fat
  • Controlled in sodium and cholesterol
  • Supply at least 10% of the daily value for three beneficial nutrients (calcium, protein, fiber, iron, vitamin A or vitamin C)

I tried out two of their steamer meals. The Beef Tips Portobello Complete Meal has 18 grams of protein! I didn’t care for the mashed potatoes – maybe they should try roasted potatoes. But the meal was filling and the apple multi grain crisp was delicious! I also tried the Sesame Glazed Chicken Steaming Entree. I liked the whole grain rice with chicken tenderloins. Both meals left me feeling full and had a good flavor. At 5 and 6 grams of fat each and under 600 mg sodium, I feel these are healthier choices for people who need portion-controlled meals on the go!

I hope in the future Healthy Choice comes out with an organic line – that would be fantastic!

What are three healthy choices you’re making these days?

A a general rule I don't talk about health topics with people because... well they don't actually want to hear it! BUT this article came out and I'm pretty sure anyone going into organic gardening would want to know about this.....

"Think you're buying "organic compost" at the local home supply store? You might want to do your homework on this, because a lot of the so-called organic compost is actually made from treated human sewage.

The Organic Consumers Association has been covering this story for months, and today we bring you the latest update on this shocking revelation that's causing innocent gardeners to dump human sewage on their home gardens! (Can you imagine all the pharma chemicals that are in that soil?)"

-No High Fructose Corn Syrup -Eating Healthier in general (no processed foods) -We were on a No fast food diet, but now that I'm pregnant, I have no energy to cook often so we're getting fast food and takeout much more than I'd like to admit... -We also try and eat organic where we can. We can't fully switch because of the cost, but if I can get an organic item with a coupon for the same cost as the regular, I'll buy it.

Less sugar is sooo hard!

We try and buy a lot of organics too. Or at least nothing with high fructose, artificial sweetners, you know...

(oh my I'm looking to the left here at the CUTEST poodle crayon roll!)
