I realize for many moms, packing lunches and snacks for school is not a big deal. But I have my first school-aged child in the house. We’re just getting used to being dressed, fed, and out the door at 7:30! Especially with my slow eaters, who could spend a leisurely forty-five minutes over a baby bowl of cereal. I find myself needing a quick breakfast snack mix recipe the boys can take in the car for breakfast.

I’ve been taking the boys to a weekly homeschool class since September. Our Classical Conversations group meets each Thursday, and recently, I became a substitute tutor, so some mornings, I have to be there at 8 a.m.
After much trial and error (egg sandwiches and yogurt squeeze sticks are not for 2.5 year olds in the car!), I came up with this quick kids’ snack mix blend. I think moms who hit the road with kids in the morning will love it.
I call it my Morning Munch Mix Recipe! The boys love it. I love it. And we get to class on time! Not only is it a fast recipe to throw together, but you can make it ahead of time and store it for a day or two.

Quick Breakfast Snack Mix – Morning Munch Mix Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 box Horizon Snack Crackers
- 1 box Horizon Graham Crackers
- 2 cups freeze-dried fruit (for extra crunchiness)
- 1 cup nuts (I used almonds, but mixed are fine – whatever your kids like)
Instructions
- Blend all ingredients together and toss lightly.
- Scoop into bags or containers that seal tightly, so the crackers don’t go stale and the fruit doesn’t harden.
- Serve within 2 days for freshest taste and texture.
What’s great about this breakfast snack is it has something crunchy, something fruity, and something hearty. I encourage my family to live a healthy lifestyle, and included in that is giving my kids enough protein at breakfast. So I added in the Horizon cheese or peanut butter sandwich crackers for the extra protein, plus a handful of nuts. A bit of protein first thing gives them more to “go” on for their morning class.
This snack mix is also perfect for any time of day, but I like that the fruits added give it more of a breakfast taste, and the snack grahams add a bit of sweetness that most of us crave in the mornings (I know I do!).

My boys usually wash their Morning Munch Mix down with a Horizon Milk Box when we’re on the go. These milk boxes are a special “travel treat” in our house, and the boys look forward to them. Plus the milk also gives them more protein.
