Easy to use Poem in Your Pocket Day Printable for use in the classroom or homeschool, or for any one celebrating poetry!
Yes, I can get pretty geeked out about National Poetry Month. As a middle school teacher, I couldn't wait for April, not because it meant test-season was over (although that too!), but because it meant an entire month of teaching poetry writing to my kids. We always tried to have some kind of Poem in your Pocket Day celebration and this easy to use printable would have been perfect for my classroom.

Poem in your Pocket Day
Poem in your Pocket Day was created in 2002 by the mayor of NYC as a way to encourage carrying and sharing poetry with everyone around you! The Academy of American Poets now hosts this day every year as part of April, National Poetry Month.
It really is so simple. Grab a poem, stick it in your pocket, and share it with someone. I love the simplicity of this endeavor, which has continued for over two decades now!
This year, Poem in your Pocket Day is April 30, 2026.

Poetry Readers become Poetry Writers
Make poetry part of everyday life! Celebrate it, share it, and use it. There's no better entry point than a day dedicated to carrying and reading poems-and even trying a few of your own.
When children engage with poetry, they experience language differently. They hear rhythm, notice word choice, and start to understand how meaning and sound work together. Their vocabulary grows, and so does their sense of how language can move and shape ideas. Much of the music we love began as poetry. Check out these posts on poetry and children:
