Before a child learns to write or read, they are read to. Children with favorite books likely recognize favorite characters and series at a glance. This recognition, or “reading,” of text characteristics is the very seed of literacy!
What better way to foster little authors than to allow them the privilege of becoming authors themselves?
I began this with my boys by pointing out features books we read: they all have a cover, title, author, picture. Let kids identify these features themselves on a few of their favorite books.
I’m super excited to be sharing how to teach simple text features to young children and help them create their own books as little authors in my latest guest post on the Melissa & Doug blog: Bookmaking Project for Little Authors!
Please head over and read all about it!
