Birthdays With Three

Yesterday we celebrated my husband’s birthday. Unbelievable how fast the year goes round, and now we have three birthdays in the year to celebrate (I’m already planning baby’s first – just you wait!). There’s this added dimension to birthdays now that we have a baby. Before, I would bake a cake, plan a dinner, buy presents, and make a card… and I did all that this year too, but… this year it was a little like maneuvering through an asteroid field! Here’s how dad’s birthday went down:

Stayed up till 3 am trying to bake cookies. Instead of a cake this year, I wanted to go off the beaten path. Be a little theme-ish. I baked Star Wars cookies. Oh yes, DH loves that galaxy far, far away. But the dough was stiff coming out of the fridge, even after 3 hours, so I had to add water to soften and roll out. Then I had to stay up cleaning the mess I’d made. I felt myself being pulled to the Dark Side.

Then I realized the baby hadn’t gotten Dad anything for his birthday. So an Internet search frantically began. As a present to dad, the baby, in keeping with my theme, downloaded several Star Wars ring tones for daddy’s phone (yes, isn’t he smart and savvy). Now I just have to wonder… exactly who gets the “Chewy” ring tone?

Fell into bed. Snore. This morning I overslept, barely got out of the house in time for a quick appointment. Then baby and I went to Trader Joe’s to create a “gift basket” of snacks for daddy. Found some nice deals at Old Navy for hubby and baby! I would have shopped all afternoon, but I had cookies to frost so I played a Jedi Mind Trick on myself and said, “These aren’t the clothes you’re looking for!”

Home to wrap presents and frost the cookies. Oh dear. Royal icing is not my Cantina! Fortunately, for once the baby napped two hours! So I made the cards, wrapped presents, and started icing the cookies at light speed before he woke up. Well, the cookies turned out all right. I’m no confectioner, so the frosting didn’t quite look like the picture on the box. At all. Despite stiff dough and gloppy frosting, these spacey goodies were delicious! As Yoda would say, “Eaten they have been.”
Another facet to my hubby’s birthday – the baby’s birthday greetings! First, baby had to send dad a photo text at work to say “Happy Birthday!” Then, I had the baby “make” a card with a pop up photo of him and dad inside. I wrote the birthday greeting exactly the way daddy makes baby pretend to talk – a little snarky, and totally cute. Then I made hubby read it aloud in his “baby’s voice” – which is really funny. I should make a video sometime!
Then baby, daddy, and I all hopped in the car to a “new” pizza restaurant. Here’s where my plans sort of got foiled. First, my husband confessed this wasn’t a new restaurant for him – he’d been here years ago before I knew him (what? when was that?). Then, baby decided he wanted to practice screaming like an upset Wookie (happy laugh/screams because he loves to hear his voice) almost the entire time we were in the restaurant. I barely got to eat 2 slices of my red potato pizza (yes, a very interesting choice – good, but different). Ohhhh I’m sure people were loving us! When we left, that is! On the way out, I lost one of baby’s new shoes I bought him today. Fortunately, I called the restaurant and they found it; now I have to make a trip up tomorrow.

I think my husband had a good birthday. As for me, phew – celebrating for two is a little bit like trying to keep up with an Ewok!

Have any ideas for staying sane celebrating the parent’s birthdays? What do you have your kids do for parent’s birthdays? Would love to hear ideas!

Showed the family your cookies and everyone is impressed! Even forwarded them to my friend whose boys love Star Wars. :)Boys make cards for dad and will sometimes have their own gifts for him, depending on how organized I am that year!
