My Favorite Cloth Diapers (And Why!)

When it comes to setting up a cloth diaper stash, you want to pick the best cloth diapers for you and your baby. Here’s the list and why!

I’ve written probably over 100 cloth diaper reviews (or diapering products!). So you’d think I’d have a favorite by now, right?

Well… I do. But today’s favorite might not be tomorrow’s favorite.

Why? Because…

Situations change – some diapers are great at home, nap, bedtime. But too “fluffy” to fit underneath close fitting clothing. Other diapers are great anytime, but people unfamiliar with cloth diapers might not “get” them. Other diapers are good all around, but take too long to dry (hubby’s complaint, not mine!).

Babies also change! Now that we have an infant, I’m pulling out diapers that sat dormant for nearly a year because my son outgrew them, or they couldn’t stand up to his heavier wetting at nap/bedtime. Likewise, some diapers are still too big for the baby. And many diapers my toddler (still not 100% potty trained!) does not fit into even though they are one size!

So… my “favorite” diaper is a flexible list.

If you ask which diapers I recommend for someone new to cloth, well… I’d probably have to chat with you to find out your situation.

My Favorite Cloth Diapers

FuzziBunz One Size Elite Diaper

The FuzziBunz One Size Elite Diaper steps it up to a new level by re-engineering their already popular One Size diaper! There are many changes from the original FuzziBunz you should know about.

First, there’s the same easy-replace elastic on the sides for adjustable sizing. I love how FuzziBunz sends you the replacement elastics WITH your diaper, so you don’t have to worry about ordering them a year or two later! (For the record, I never had to replace these through diapering 2 babies!). Speaking of adjustability, there are THREE ways to adjust this diaper – with the side elastics, with the waist buttons, and with the snaps! You can really customize!

Also, the Elite has a quick-dry fleece lining… it is so soft and, well, Fuzzi! Your baby’s skin will thank you!

My absolute favorite upgrade has to be the minky inserts. Minky is sooo soft and lovely-feeling! It creates less odor than micro-fiber inserts, stains less, and makes a trimmer diaper.

The Flip Diaper System

Overwhelmingly, I was so happy when I discovered the Flip diaper system. Flips are a hybrid cover + insert system where you change out the inserts until the cover gets soiled (I usually change covers after 3 inserts).

I started out with a stash of 16 bumGenius 3.0’s. I only washed four of them as I eased into cloth. But they were so big on my baby I despaired of them ever fitting, so I set out to find a better option. A friend suggested the Flip system. I liked the idea of a less expensive diaper, less laundry to wash, and trimmer sizing.

I returned my unused BG’s and bought five sets of Flips (1 cover, 3 inserts). I loved the Flip’s two rows of snaps.

Despite the many good diapers that I tried over the years, I never – not ever – stopped using the Flip diaper system in our rotation. Perhaps this is because I have more of them than any other diaper but… I have a LOT of other diapers!

The main reason is I know they work, are easy to use and wash, and easy to size up and down quickly. This feature makes them perfect for diapering multiple babies of different ages! I’m currently using them on both my baby and toddler.

Flips wear well. I still have the original five covers and fifteen inserts. The elastic on the covers is a BIT stretched out – they work fine for our toddler, but are a bit too loose on the baby’s thighs (so I bought him his OWN set of covers when they were on seconds sale!). The inserts have minimal staining, no pilling, and while they aren’t as “thick” as when we first started, they absorb well!

I don’t, however, use Flip diapers for bedtime as I was never sure they would hold up – for bed I prefer the BG 3.0s (still have the original four of those as well!).

Here’s a few other diapers I love and if I had the money, I’d add a good deal more to my stash:

The truth is, while Flips are my favorites, the majority of our cloth diapers come in a very close second. A few diapers fit well at third tier, and a very small number of diapers I didn’t care for in the long run. Even the diapers I removed from my rotation – it’s not that they didn’t work, just that they didn’t work for me and my baby!

It’s so hard to pick a favorite cloth diaper. But I tried!

What is your favorite cloth diaper? Can you pick!?

I have been told to try the Flip system many times. I think I will look into it, it sounds so convenient.
