Start your stash with prefolds and covers. (Trust me!)

Okay so… as much as there are lots of lovely diaper styles and types and prints and fabrics out there (and there are)… I have begun giving my readers and friends this advice:

Start your stash with prefolds and covers!

(Notice, I didn’t say your stash has to END there – more power to the crazy-fun prints and innovative diapers!).

But I do think moms new to cloth diapering would do well to start out with a set of prefolds and covers for a few reasons:

~They are inexpensive. (If you decide cloth diapering is not for you, you will not have invested too much money yet).

~They are workhorses.

~They are easy to wash and care for. (Very hard to “ruin”).

~They are versatile (so many ways to fold them).

~They are durable.

~They have good resale value – people are always looking to buy up some used prefolds and covers to start or supplement their own stash!).

~They work great for camping and handwashing (okay, maybe you don’t have this need but I thought I’d mention it!).

Have I given you enough reasons yet?

How about one more? Real Nappies diapers sent me a complimentary Top Up Pack of diaper covers and prefolds in 6-18 month (18-31 lbs) size. I’d already become a fan of their newborn cover / prefold and I loved how well that diaper fit and worked for my son during the early months. It actually outlasted all the other newborn diapers I had as far as fitting him!

So I was happy to have our baby back in the soft Indian cotton of a Real Nappies diaper set. The prefolds seem to run a bit wider than other brands I’ve tried, so they make for a bit of a bulkier diaper than some. But I love the fit overall.

The PUL cover fits snugly over the thick prefold (I always fold my prefolds up into pads I lay into the cover – doing all those folds is really not for me, I have discovered). The elastics have a soft binding that doesn’t leave red marks on my baby’s chunky legs. Real Nappies covers only come with hook / loop closures, but they are the most flexible closures I have seen, and don’t tend to snag lint in the wash as much.

Real Nappies, a New Zealand brand, makes a quality, simple-to-use diaper/cover system and they offer a two child guarantee! Now that is something! An Intro Pack retails for $16.99, making them a bit cheaper than pockets/AIOs. For a full day or two of diapering with Real Nappies, get the Cloth Diaper Essentials Pack with 12 changes (3 covers, 12 prefolds, 100 bioliners) for just $80 – under $7 per diaper change!!

Have you added prefolds and covers to your stash?

Maybe you’re wondering how prefolds work on older babies? or even toddlers? Well, today, I’m posting in coordination with Bri at EcoBabyMamaDrama.com and she’s also reviewing Real Nappies cloth diaper covers and prefolds! Read her views on this diapering system as a toddler solution!

Thanks to Real Nappies for sending products to facilitate this post. All opinions are 100% my own.

I actually just found 13 prefolds - size medium at a local thrift store. They look like they were never even used as they did not have the wrinkled look they get when properly prepped. I was so excited, especially since they were only $1.99 for all 13. We will be adding these to our stash. I also rented some newborn covers to use our smaller prefolds with our newborn, too. Love prefolds also to use instead of microfiber inserts - less stink.

I trifolded for six of my babies and then discovered the Angel fold. It was great! I loved the gussets since they kept the EBF poop off our covers.

I agree with you. Prefolds were the first cloth diapers I bought. They're cheap, easy to care for, and can be used for other things, burp cloths, cleaning rags, etc.
