With my first baby, I knew I would cloth diaper, and had everything ready to go. Yet part of the plan was to have 2 weeks “lead time” for post-partum recovery, and to transition into the cloth diapering. I was concerned about laundry routines most of all, and lugging heavy bags of soiled diapers up and down two flights after just delivering.
As it turns out, my son was far too small for the Bum Genius diapers I’d purchased, so I had to delay until about 6-7 weeks before even thinking of starting cloth. Even then, I had a lot of leakage due to overly large diapers (I didn’t get my Flips and other brands until several weeks after that!).
This time, my initial plan was to start using cloth right away, just NOT in the hospital. I thought it would be a hassle, considering last time we were at the hospital almost four days due to my son’s jaundice. Also I’m worried about meconium staining in the diapers (should I be?).
But wait. What is the point of delaying this time, I thought? It’s not like laundry routines frighten me anymore. And I’m blessed to have a baby in the summer with hubby home to carry dipes downstairs (yes, I am proud to say my husband is a cloth diaper laundry expert… until the folding stage, that is!). Plus, I have these super-cute, squishy fluff-bits just waiting to be put on a bitty bum!
So now… I’ve changed my mind. There is no reason for me not to TRY to cloth diaper in the hospital. So, my intention is to start cloth diapering from Day 1! I can at least be ready to use the diapers from the start, and if something happens, I am flexible to not make it be a life/death issue (the hospital did say they supported cloth!). And I am going to use disposable liners for quite some time to protect my newborn cloth from staining (some are rentals so I want to be sure nothing happens!).
My question is… I forget – who puts that very first diaper on the baby? Is that the nurse’s job? Or do I get to do it? I am hoping our new baby’s first dipe can be cloth!
When did you start using cloth with your babies? Any tips for me using cloth in the hospital?

I was suggested this website by my cousin. I am not sure whether this post is written by him as no one else know such detailed about my problem. You're amazing! Thanks!

We used cloth from the first diaper. I had a planned c-section, so it was my husband's job to keep the first diaper with him and either put it on baby or have the nurse put it on baby. He gave it to the nurse and she put it on.From then on, I changed ALL diapers. You would think it would be hard since I was pretty much alone 99% of the time in the hsopital since my husband was home with our other children. he only got to vsit a few times in short bursts between work and our other children. I figured I'd be changing diapers regardless, why not cloth. He did do a load or two of laundry for me, but then I picked it back up. It was easy peasy and i would do it again in a heartbeat

I planned to start cloth diapering with my daughter as soon as we got home from the hospital, but in reality it was when she was 4-6 months old. Hopefully with the next one, it will be when he/she comes home from the hospital. My husband is definitely NOT a cloth diaper launderer. He'll change out daughter in and out of her cloth diapers and hang them to dry, but that's it.
