Free Conversation Hearts Printable for Kids

Would Valentine’s be complete without the ubiquitous conversation heart candy? (Well, in 2019, it had to be, since the candy wasn’t being made that year!). Thinking about a writing / copy work activity for my boys themed around the idea of love for Valentine’s Day, I decided writing their own conversation hearts for God would be perfect! So, I created this conversation hearts printable for kids!

This printable works especially well in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, whether you’re planning ahead for a Sunday School class activity, family devotional, or looking for a last-minute Valentine’s activity. The free printable (download below) includes both our Conversation Hearts for God activity and generic conversation hearts for any Valentine’s themed activity.

Using a Hymn with our Conversation Hearts Printable

As I thought about how cute it would be for the boys to write conversation hearts for God, we were also beginning the February hymn study of “My Jesus, I Love Thee.” We’ve been using Happy Hymnody’s Hymn of the Month downloads for over a year now, and LOVE every month. If you’re looking for a low-key way to bring more faith into your daily life, follow her on Instagram to enjoy her community of hymn lovers!

As we sang the song each day this past week, I was struck by how many phrases in the song are little love notes to God. Or “terms of endearment” to our God.

  • My Jesus
  • I love thee
  • Thou art mine
  • Gracious Redeemer
  • Endless delight
  • Ever adore thee
  • Praise thee
  • My Savior

The boys and I picked out these loving words to our Savior from the song, and then they wrote them in their Conversation Hearts worksheet I designed.

Using glittery pens and markers, the boys could make them as fancy and personalized as they liked. Most importantly, we’re diving into the truth of the words in this song. Our love for Jesus is really only a reflection and reaction to His love for us.

Listening and Writing

As the boys drew and doodled their conversation hearts for God, we played various versions of this hymn in the background. The boys like having a hands-on activity while we listen to the song.

We get the playlist suggestions from Happy Hymnody’s fabulous YouTube channel. I just save our favorite hymn versions to my own playlist and we cycle through them during the month. We listen to hymns during our morning time, our lunchtime, and during art and often include hymns in our copywriting activities.

Other Applications:

Educational benefits we’ve noticed from this activity as well, include:

  • Handwriting
  • Spelling
  • Fine Motor Skills
  • Critical Thinking
  • Analyzing social/emotional words and context

You can try this activity with other faith-based songs, or poems, pulling out the phrases that show how we love God, or how God loves us. This site pulled out 40+ verses about God’s love for us, that could also be used with this activity. For older kids, the hearts could be used as an outline to write an essay or “love note.”

Writing Activities with Your Conversation Hearts

These printable conversation hearts aren’t just for coloring and copywork. Use them as a tool for Valentine’s writing prompts for kids and faith-based reflection. Here are several ways middle graders can use the hearts printable to practice writing while exploring themes of love, kindness, and God’s Word:

1. Reflective Paragraph Writing
Have students choose their favorite heart phrase. Then, ask them to write a short paragraph explaining why they picked each phrase and how it connects to a Bible verse, story, or real-life example. For instance, a heart that says “Show Kindness” could inspire a paragraph about Ephesians 4:32 and ways they can be kind to friends and family. Encourage them to use proper paragraph structure, with a topic sentence, 3-5 details, and a concluding sentence.

2. Devotional Journal Entries
Encourage your students to use the heart phrases as prompts for faith-based journaling. They can write about God’s love, how they experience it daily, or ways to show love to others. This turns a simple Valentine activity into a middle-grade devotional writing exercise.

3. Creative Stories
Students can invent short stories using the heart phrases. Their story could illustrate love, forgiveness, or courage — or even retell a Bible story in a modern setting. This helps strengthen creative writing skills while keeping the Valentine theme fun and meaningful.
