DAD'S Log: "Use the cloth…Luke"

When my wife first introduced the concept of cloth diapers I would have to admit that internally, I had the same cynicism that Han Solo had with “The Force” in the real first Star Wars movie. I was like “what a bunch of ancient hocupocus.” Seriously, all I could think about was folding squares of cloth, safety pins, (not Safety Dance) and of course sticking myself or even worse…the baby! I won’t even get into the other visions of dealing with the soiled ones… unfolding and….blah!

Of course, much like a young Luke Skywalker, I had a lot to learn about cloth diapers. Lucky for me, my wife had been researching them for years and was going to hit me with the 411. As I soon learned…these are not the cloth diapers of old. I was actually intrigued by the designs and configurations…well…actually the cost savings in the long run. I also ran an analysis of the number of diaper changes I would most likely make out of the total number of possible diaper changes and the numbers were favorable for me. (I sure hope my wife does not find out about this…shhh…don’t tell her!)

So it was light speed ahead. After a couple of training sessions with a couple of stuffed animals, I felt confident and good to go with Asher. Bring it on Asher! What…a little number 1…ooooh I’m scared…..oh a little number 2…wow…big deal….WHOA! number 3?!….HONEY!!!

I would have to say that cloth diapering is going awesome. From a Dad perspective it’s not that big of a deal. Yes…I enjoy it. I think it is easy. When people question the amount of “work” involved I respond, ” I don’t consider caring for and raising my child work.” (Most people are great at starting conversations, me…ending them.)  Definitely do your research, talk with your spouse, (sorry guys/ladies) and have a clear plan before venturing in. It must fit your lifestyle, that is the key!

Now for the big “Dad endorsement.” I like the Flip, simple, easy, and quick especially if he is just wet. Love the snaps. Speed comes with time on task. They also have disposable inserts for when you know the baby is due for a big one…or should I say two? We actually use the Flip for the day, but for the overnight, we go with the Bum Genius with the “doubler.” Have them ready to use, it is much easier to change with your eyes closed. So really it is more of a two pronged approach. That’s what we have developed.

So as Luke Skywalker became a Jedi like his father before him, I am a Cloth Diaper Dad, like my father before me. Use the cloth…Luke!

p.s.  I have recently found out the Bum Genius is coming out with a new item and discontinuing their current line. Does anyone remember “New Coke?” This should be interesting.

Thanks SO much for posting this! I really appreciate you stepping out and saying how you feel about cloth diapers, from a dad's perspective! I have been using cloth for my 2 boys for 4 months now and my hubby still isn't into it. I don't think it's nearly as gross as he does, but I do understand where he's coming from... He's not used to it like I am... :)I think I'm going to send him this post! Let him know there are dad's out there that are happy about cloth! :)Thanks again!http://giveawaysandlife.blogspot.com/

Your love of sci-fi reaches even to the diaper change! What dedication! So have you tried doing a change with the blast shield down yet?

This is awesome! Kudos to you for trying something new! You and your wife are very convincing. We may try cloth when we - eventually - get pregnant with baby #3. ;)stephanie@metropolitanmama.net
