Currently, the floor is too cold for bare feet just out of the warm cocoon of bedding… socks are our frequent companions.

Hearty, sweet and creamy, oatmeal is a frequent warming start to our mornings.
I used to be a breakfast-skipper before I had kids, even though I knew that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Having children made me eat healthier, because I’m more likely to be concerned that they eat right, and that they see a good example in my eating habits.
For busy families, oatmeal is a quick, easy, and nutritious way to get a hot breakfast. Here’s what I love about oatmeal:
There’s no artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, and it’s an excellent source of iron, which is an essential mineral for proper infant growth and development. Plus, we use organically grown whole grains, and don’t add refined white or brown sugar. Instead, we prefer to sweeten with real maple syrup or honey! It’s a win-win!
Make-ahead Oatmeal Saves Time – and the Day!
I’m really into make-aheads this year. Make-ahead meals are incredible time and sanity savers!
Make-ahead oatmeal in a jar is an easy way to get started with making meals ahead because it doesn’t require a ton of ingredients. This recipe is sometimes known as “no-cook oatmeal” or even “summer porridge.” There are many ways to create make-ahead oatmeal, but basically it’s just throwing ingredients in a jar and letting it sit overnight.
Make-Ahead Cinnamon Apple Oatmeal Recipe
Here’s my version of Cinnamon-Apple Oatmeal, using handy snack packs of organic applesauce (you could certainly use a larger jar of sauce, or unflavored applesauce). These little applesauce packs are great for adding to recipes to cut sugar!
Make-Ahead Cinnamon Apple Oatmeal
Equipment
- 1 jelly jar
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup oatmeal (rolled, not quick)
- 1/3 cup plain yogurt
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tsp honey
- 1/4 cup cinnamon applesauce (or 1 applesauce cup)
Instructions
- Fill glass jelly jar with all ingredients, in the order listed.
- Do not stir.
- Place lid on jar and put in refrigerator overnight.
- Open, stir, and enjoy!
Notes
My verdict? I enjoyed this breakfast. The oatmeal is a little chewy, and you may find it weird to eat cold oatmeal. So if you want to warm up your morning, just sit your jars in a pan of boiled water until they are heated through (but no need to actually “cook” them because the overnight soaking will be enough).
The milk/yogurt makes it a creamy breakfast, and the applesauce gives the sweetness I like in the morning!

I have never heard of this idea! I wonder if my oatmeal eating kids would eat it. I know they like hot things better but I am going to have to try it!

This is a great idea! My kids love oatmeal and this looks delicious and would make mornings so much easier.
