This post about road trip snacking is brought to you by the sponsors mentioned who sent me samples free of charge for my review. All opinions are 100% my own.
Traveling always gives me a case of the snackies. Maybe it’s the monotony of the highway. All I know is… road trips make me hungry!
To save time and money, we packed a delicious assortment of snacks to keep us pushing down the road on our 24-hour road trip to Florida. Our goal was to stop as little as possible, and spend as little as possible on junk food! The best way to do that was pack it all!
Here’s what we brought, and our thoughts (top middle, clockwise).
For breakfasts on the road, we enjoyed “Karma”ffins from U-Be-Livin-Smart – a real natural nurtient dense food! No flour, no oil, no sugar, no no no bad stuff muffin! Check out the info on these muffins!
With four flavors (Belgian Chocolate, Apple Cinnamon, Orange Cinnamon, Berry Medley) there’s a flavor for everyone! I liked how the texture of these muffins was moist and dense, not dry and crumbly – this made them great as traveling food! I did have to get used to the minimal sweetness – I’m used to a much sweeter muffin (but that’s not healthy! I know!). However, the flavors were robust!
Our FAVORITE brand of granola bars, KIND Snacks, sent us a variety of flavors to try out. Granola bars are a staple in our house whether we are traveling or not. But for road trips they make so much sense. From KIND Nuts & Spices (Dark Chocolate, Nuts, and Sea Salt!) to Kind PLUS (with nutritional boost), and original KIND Fruits & Nuts – each bar was sweet and satisfying. All the ingredients are natural with high quality nuts. I think all are gluten-free as well! These bars travel well, and give just the right mix of sweet/salty to satisfy! A few are a bit sticky, so pack some wet wipes!
If you’re looking for an unusual and crunchy snack, try Sahale Snacks (pronounced “saHAlee”)! My favorite was their new Crunchers: Cranberry, Sesame Seed, + Honey – crunchy jumbles of just delicious fruit and nuts. Hubby really enjoyed the zing of Soledad Almonds with almonds, apples, and flax seeds, date, balsamic vinegar and cayenne. Yes, Sahale has several really intriguing flavor combos! They travel well in their pouches and are great for popping as a snack or having with lunch!
For beverages, taking along shelf-stable milk was convenient, and a tasty money saver. Buying milk at drive throughs and coffee shops is expensive, plus they only sell those large “chug” sizes! There’s no need to refrigerate (although we did for taste!), so you don’t have to worry if your cooler gets warm while traveling! Interesting fact: the US has been a late adopter of shelf-stable milk, but it’s been available for over 50 years! And in many varieties like organic, conventional, chocolate, and even “cereal” flavored milk (my toddler’s fav!).
We took fruit along too, the super-crispy bake-dried Bare Fruit organic Cinnamon Apple Chips! Each bag is generously sized and can satisfy at least two people. The crispiness was wonderful! You need a variety of textures when you’re eating on the road. Bare Fruit makes three organic apple chips, three conventional apple chips, and three organic dried fruit snacks: apricot, mango, pear!
Of course, what road trip would be complete without a little bit of … candy! I used to pack a lot of candy treats for road trips. But after our December trip to NC where we ate too many sweets and felt terrible afterwards, I determined this time I’d pack better options. So I was pleased when Natural Vines (the natural version of Red Vines) wanted to tag along for our trip! We tried the black licorice and strawberry versions. They are great for road trips because they can handle being in a hot car, are bite sized, and are just plain tasty. These soft licorice treats have no trans fat, soy, or HFCS, plus are kosher, cholesterol free, vegan, and nut free! These were the only candies I packed as a matter of fact!
Our toddler and baby loved snacking on Happy Family baby snacks like yogurt puffs, rice cakes, cheese puffs and more. Happy Family Foods even make complete happytot meal bowls – perfect for picky eaters when you’re a guest! Many of their organic snacks come in containers great for traveling with flip top lids for easy pouring/storage. And you know how much I love pouch foods!? I picked up several of their pouch baby purees for our youngest’s dinners! It was easy to plan for my baby’s meals by simply writing a date/meal on each pouch.
Making a bunch of “sammies” is a great idea for a road trip. We made ours with Rudi’s Organic Flatz in Whole Wheat and Multi Grain. We tried Peanut Butter & Jelly when we first left the house (I didn’t want to waste time sitting at home eating lunch!). The Flatz are possibly not the best for slippery PB&J as they are thin and don’t “absorb” the liquid well (we use natural/organic PB so it’s a bit runny). However, they were tasty!
For dinner, we had lunchmeat/cheese sammies – and the Flatz were much more suited to this type of sandwich! I liked how they are slim so they don’t take up much space in the cooler. AND, they don’t get squished or crumble and fall apart either like other breads might.
Wow, that’s a lot of food, but I am happy to say that most of it is organic, all of it was tasty, and having a cooler full of delicious and new snacks to test out made the miles go faster!
