I know I reference a lot on the blog how our family slowly transitioned from buying and eating whatever we wanted to a living more naturally.
Now it seems like we’ve always lived this way (and we have a ways to go!), and since our major changes were pre-blogging days, maybe our readers think we’re just “naturals” at this natural living thing, but… it really isn’t the case.
I remember a time when we didn’t use all natural products!
I was shopping with my mom today and she mentioned she wanted to get paper plates. And I said, “For what?” because to me, paper plates NOW are only for if we have a BIG party we can’t plate with our own dishware or don’t have time to clean up after. But there was a time when paper plates and paper napkins were the norm for our family. And I remember those first few weeks when it seemed all we did was wash dishes!
Cloth diapering seems like a no-brainer, but I do try to consider it from the outsider’s point of view – it MIGHT sound yucky and like it takes up a lot of time. (not true).
Buying organic food is ALMOST second nature to me, and I know the label “all-natural” doesn’t mean it’s good for us. But… I remember a time when just seeing the word “natural” meant I thought I’d bought something super healthy (not always true!).
So. I do know, it’s not easy to shift from the mainstream and go natural. That’s why I always tell people to take small steps towards healthier living.
How to take small steps to healthier living
The way we shifted our lifestyle was simple. The first year, we picked ONE thing we’d buy organic all year long. It added a couple dollars to our grocery bill, but we didn’t feel it much. The next year we added the CSA and another grocery item. So that was a bigger jump.
Then it was switching to cloth napkins. Ditching paper plates. We took on these shifts as mini-projects, instead of going cold turkey and throwing out everything in the house.
Switching your baby wipes is a great small step!
Remember last month I wrote about a gentle and natural disposable wipe called Water Wipes? Well… that’s one of those products that helps you make a move towards natural living. Just changing your baby wipes brand can be one small step in a healthier direction.
With ingredients that are 99% water + grapefruit extract, you won’t worry about harsh chemical preservatives touching your baby.
I know not everyone is going to want to use cloth wipes like I do most of the time, and even I don’t use cloth wipes all the time. I like Water Wipes helps me find that balance between natural living and not driving myself crazy. When I do get disposable products, I really read the ingredients to be sure I’m comfortable using them for our family.
I’m glad Water Wipes are now available both in store and online (check your local Walgreens and Walgreens.com!). Water Wipes are now my preferred disposable wipe for travel and diaper bags, so I’m happy they’ll be easier to find!
What’s your next small step?

I make sure that my children always eat vegetables everyday and when our garden is in full bloom we have fresh veggies. I also make sure that they drink a lot of water or juice and no soft drinks.
