Tot Explorations: Melted Snowman in a Jar

Here’s an easy way to reuse those Earth’s Best baby food jars and celebrate winter fun too! Take one jar and add a heaping tablespoon of white glitter. Cut a small triangle out of orange paper. Add about a half-dozen black dots (you can hole punch them from black paper). Throw in a couple googly-eyes. […]

How do I do picture study in my homeschool? And wh How do I do picture study in my homeschool? And what IS a “ten-second sketch”?
We are very casual about picture study. I believe it is better to do something than nothing at all. Charlotte Mason posited that art should generate from the child, not be directed by the teacher. So our picture study largely involves observing artwork, naming what we observe, and trying to incorporate the vocabulary of our drawing lessons from our @classicalconversations study. On occasion, we get a little hands-on!
Today, the boys did double-duty: picture study AND art lesson practice. After carefully observing just the touching hands part of this famous Michelangelo masterpiece, they got out their sketchbooks and did a “ten-second sketch” of what they saw. A ten-second sketch is when artists quickly sketch the shape and alignment of an image. Sometimes this does go on for more than ten seconds, as my boys told me… but the idea is to just quickly get the shape down on paper. They learned this drawing practice activity from their wonderful art teacher @artisticedgect! We love using it in our homeschool to sneak in a few quick moments of art into our lessons. I am NOT an artist, but I can still lead my children into discovering and appreciating art. And you can too! If you need a little help, my morning menus might be just the “boost” you need for your homeschool! Picture study is included in every month of my Classical Morning Menus. I have carefully selected 9 pieces of art that represent major artists, movements, and themes of the time period. I’ve also included a one-sheet guide where I’ve provided general questions you can ask of nearly every piece of art you study! Makes for great conversations! In New England, May-- we fully commit to spring, In New England, May--
we fully commit to spring,
the earth breaths a slow green mist…
then flowers and plants
gush green from the ground.
Constellations of dandelions
wink out--
collapsed stars of white fuzz.
We go barefoot
in grass that can’t wait
for our lawnmower to keep up.
We welcome flowers indoors
like friends from a far country.
May is a mixed month
of hurry and slow…
Hurry and grow,
Go slow through the new-warm air.
Hurry, finish that math page,
Slow down, math can wait,
the flowers can’t.
And just about the time
we slow down enough…
here comes June! I love May!
Pictured are lily of the valley, blue wild geranium, and bleeding heart from our flower beds. #May #spring #NewEngland #homeschoolife #homeschoolmom #momofboys #springflowers #flowerbouquet #poetry #flashpoem
📚💖Bookshelf love!! It’s May and that means 📚💖Bookshelf love!! It’s May and that means we get completely absorbed in planning next year’s curriculum! (Bc it’s so much more fun to plan the next thing than finish the last thing, right?!? 🤣) Here’s a glance at a handful of our favorite #geography books for multiple grade levels. See any favorites? Have a suggestion? Let me know!
