So I’ve shared with you upcycled container ideas for making a bank, or setting up a bowling game.
Here’s another upcycled container creation for your little tot to enjoy as a quiet time activity! If you have a baby in the house… you probably have a lot of baby jars handy… could be an understatement!! We think ours are somehow multiplying like bunnies! So I put a few to good use with this DIY project.
Upcyled Container Ideas: DIY I-Spy Jar
First, I cleaned off the label and sticky gunk. Then, I roamed the house looking for small objects:
- paperclip
- star thumbtack
- coffee bean
- penny
- M&M
- gummi bear
- small eraser
- tiny jingle bell
- buttons
- mini clothespin
- mini animals
- pony beads
You can even make food dyed colored rice (similar technique as this DIY colored pasta craft) for a fun effect (I chose red for Christmas-time! But you could change it up according to the season, or mix up several colors to make rainbow rice!).
Add your small items into the jar.
Then fill remainder of jar with rice. Be sure to fill it almost full otherwise it will be too easy for kids to find the items. “Toss” the rice and objects a little like salad to mix them up and “hide” the objects inside the rice.
Replace lid and GLUE on! Safety first – those are small items and hard dry rice – you don’t want little kids getting their hands on them!
Now – time to play! Let your child roll and shake the jar to try to find the hidden items!
Here’s a few more of my upcycled container ideas!
- Melted Snowman in a Jar
- Stained Glass Christmas Tree Ornament
- Upcycled Heart Matching Game
- Upcycled Before Dinner Activity / Game
Don’t you love how you’ll have so much less trash to throw away now? And your kids will have all sorts of new-to-them toys and games to play with! That’s a win-win!
How do you upcycle your containers at your home!?

We have done this except use plastic bottles. My kids are a little tough on stuff and we'd certainly have one broken in no time. I do like how you've reused and made something the kids can enjoy.
